Drala Jong Drala Jong – A Vajrayana Buddhist Retreat Centre in West Wales. Appreciation is the key to enjoyment – and, to delighting in the enjoyment of others.

Drala Jong is a place where human beings can discover the pleasure of existence – the pleasure that animates the sense fields and revitalises the Arts – and the art of living. Drala Jong སྒྲ་བླ་ལྗོས་ retreat centre project was initiated at the direction and inspiration of Kyabjé Düd’jom Rinpoche, Jigrel Yeshé Dorje and Kyabjé Künzang Dorje Rinpoche. Drala Jong is the home of the Aro gTér Tradition —— a small family-based Dzogchen lineage within the Nyingma Vajrayana Tradition. Drala Jong exists innately in human beings.
‘Drala’ is the appreciative faculty which enlivens people exponentially as they begin to engage more openly with the phenomenal world. When we learn to appreciate phenomena our sense fields ‘jong’ begin to sparkle and a sense of generosity is born, connecting us more dynamically ‘drala’ with others. Although Vajrayana is by no means unknown in the West, the sense in which enjoyment and compassion are mutually interdependent remains unexpressed. Drala Jong is a place where human beings can discover the open-ended pleasure of existence – the authentic pleasure which animates the sense fields, revitalises the Arts and the art of living, and creates a better world for Everyone & Everything, Everywhere. Drala Jong༄Another stage of development is now taking place in the gradual conversion of the shrinehall at Drala Jong. The Lhakhang, Trökhang, Phurkhang, and Gönkhang cabinets are being assembled.

Garwang and Wangdrüp arrived from Austria and Zürich with the pre-constructed elements of the shrine and cabinets are now busy with the skilled woodwork. The cabinets will be ready to be installed by early next week— ready to receive the Lineage statues.

Developments in the shrine hall at Drala Jong.

Ngak'chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen write:
'༄The plastering work in the shrinehall at Drala Jong is now completed. Although this scene is sparse and bereft of statues, thangkas, and the other appurtenances which make a shrinehall — this is a wonderful sight. The absence of everything means that another stage has been reached in the gradual conversion of the room.

Now this has been completed the shrinehall coloured stripes will be completed. These are the colours as designated by Kyabjé Düd’jom Rinpoche Jig’drèl Yeshé Dorje in 1978. They were only used in the London and Paris Düd‘jom gTér centre — and, since those centres were appropriated, they are now probably only used by the Nyingma Aro gTér Lineage.

The window on the garden side of the shrinehall is now converted into the low doorway which will lead into the Gönkhang. Kyabjé Lhatsé Trülku Rinpoche has presented Drala Jong with a marvellous hanging of Mahakala for the Gönkhang.'

The course will introduce silent sitting meditation methods from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and is suitable for both complete beginners and those with previous meditation experience.

Meditation allows the possibility of increased clarity and creativity, and a kinder and more cheerful enjoyment of life.

The latest Drala Jong newsletter is out, it is a very special one that has been published to mark 49th day since Jomo Sam’phel Déchen Rinpoche (jo mo bSam ’phel bDe chen / ཇོ་མོ་བསམ་འཕེལ་བདེ་ཆེན་) passed into Parinirvana aged 91, in Bodhanath, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Last weekend at the conclusion of the Losar retreat Ngak’chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen situated 10 Guru Rinpoche plaques around the land here at Drala Jong. This is part of the Guru Rinpoche plaque globe placing project. Thank to everyone who has made this possible.

'Placing Guru Rinpoche plaques on the land at Drala Jong has been a joy and a privilege. We have always described Drala Jong as having in inner shrine hall and outer shrine hall. The inner shrine hall is the place where we arrange the many statues and thangkas of the Aro gTér Nyingma Lineage — as well as the assemblage of lineage treasures, the ancient phurbas and the iron chain-link shawl. The less obvious lineage treasure is the 500 year old woodland where we practise the 21 Sem’dzin of Dzogchen men-ngag-dé. When meeting Kyabjé Düd’jom Rinpoche Jig’drèl Yeshé Dorje in 1971, he was described as Guru Rinpoche in person. There was no doubt about it. A life-sized life-like statue will reside in the inner shrine hall — and now that will be reflected in the Guru Rinpoche plaques which adorn the trees in the woodland. They are much smaller than the statue — but they are radiant and larger than life in their empathic statement of enduring devotion. Guru Rinpoche is the heart of the lineage.'
