Join us this Friday 26 June for the regular fun and games AS WELL AS an opportunity to become a Dementia Friend with the Alzheimer’s Society.

Starting at 11.30, we are hosting a short 40-45 minute workshop during our session, led by one of our regular guests who is also a Dementia Friends Ambassador, and hope to raise awareness of this illness and how as individuals and a Community we can make small steps to support those living with Dementia and those caring for them.

It is a FREE session and open to all businesses and organisations in the area so if you know of anyone who might be interested in coming, feel free to share.

If you DO plan to stay afterwards to join our tasty lunch, please contact Jo Bryan on 07803933981 to confirm numbers for catering. Many thanks

It’s that time again - the SECOND Friday of the month so Croeso Cynnes will be ready and waiting for you tomorrow Friday 12 June 11.00 - 2.00 in Laugharne Memorial Hall.
This session we will be holding a cake/bake tea party in support of Dementia UK and a raffle.
Dementia UK is the organisation that developed and supports Admiral Nurses. Admiral Nurses provide tailored emotional and practical support with all aspects of dementia. They make sure carers have the information, strategies and skills they need to support the person living with dementia. First-hand, practical face-to-face support at a time that many car@ers and families find it most difficult.
So please join us for our customary Warm Welcome and bring some pennies both as donations towards the cakes and for the raffle tickets. It will be a good one!
Geraldean and Jan will be rocking it in the kitchen and there will be fun games, quizzes and crafts to enjoy too.
All welcome

The first treatments that can slow Alzheimer’s disease are emerging - which means early and accurate diagnosis has never been more important.

Current diagnostic tools often rely heavily on language, such as memory or word-based tests.

While useful, these approaches can be influenced by a person’s language, education or cultural background, which could make diagnosis less accurate or accessible for some people.

We’re proud to fund research by Dr Chris Hardy, Alzheimer’s Society Carol Jennings Fellow at University College London, who is developing a new nonverbal ‘brain hearing’ test. Unlike a standard hearing test, which checks how well the ears detect sound, this test looks at how the brain processes sound.

The test asks people to identify one sound played into one ear while a different sound is played into the other. It reveals how effectively the brain separates and interprets competing noises, such as when in a busy environment like a restaurant.

Results found that patients with most forms of dementia performed worse than healthy volunteers using the nonverbal test.

By using everyday sounds and images rather than words, this approach offers a more inclusive way to assess how the brain is functioning.

It has the potential to support clinicians in identifying dementia earlier, while also improving the experience and fairness of diagnosis across diverse communities.

This test is not ready to be used widely yet. But with further research, a simple and accessible tool like this could play an important role in helping more people living with dementia access the early and accurate diagnosis they deserve.

Dementia isn’t one-size-fits-all and neither are its symptoms.

Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies are among the most common types – and each affects the brain in different ways.

From memory loss and confusion to changes in behaviour, language or movement, the symptoms can vary widely depending on the type of dementia.

This guide highlights some of the common symptoms linked to each illness, but it’s also important to remember that no two people experience dementia in the same way.

By recognising the different signs, including these lesser-known symptoms, we can spot changes earlier and help more people access an early diagnosis.
