Today is the International Day of Older Persons, a day to celebrate older people, recognise their contribution to our communities and challenge the inequalities too many still face.
Growing older should not mean becoming invisible.
Older people are neighbours, volunteers, carers, grandparents, colleagues, friends and community leaders. They bring experience, knowledge and skills that enrich communities across North Cumbria every single day.
Later life can bring challenges. Loneliness and isolation, bereavement, poor health, caring responsibilities, financial pressures, digital exclusion and difficulty accessing services can all have a profound effect.
Ageism can make those challenges harder, particularly when assumptions are made about what someone can do, what they need or how much their voice matters simply because of their age.
Age is not a measure of someone's value.
At Age UK North Cumbria, we want North Cumbria to be a place where people can enjoy later life, remain connected to their communities, get the information and support they need and, importantly, have their voices heard.
💜 Whether you need some advice, are worried about money, are feeling lonely, need help navigating services, or simply don't know where to start, Age UK North Cumbria is here. Our information and advice service is free and confidential, and open to anyone aged 50 and over, their families and carers.

Today, perhaps take a moment to think about the older people in your own life and community.
Talk to them. Listen to them. Include them. Value them.
Because ageing is something that, if we're fortunate, we all get to do.
