Rachel bravely shared how Velindre has supported her family through multiple experiences with cancer.

In her story, she reflects on the hope advances in cancer treatment have given her family, and the difference they have made over the last decade.

Thanks to the generosity of Velindre supporters, Rachel's mum has been able to create precious memories she once feared she'd miss, including meeting her granddaughter.

For 10 years, our supporters have been turning Wales red in support of Velindre. And for our 10th anniversary, one day simply isn’t enough - this year, we will be hosting a week-long celebration called WEAR RED WEEK!

"Even though Pen Y Fan is completed, we want to keep raising money for the hospital in other charity events that are going forward and will be keeping her memory alive for as long as we all live."

In October 2024, Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was incredibly brave throughout her diagnosis and treatment, and her family and friends were by her side throughout the experience. Unfortunately, Julie found another lump in her breast in January 2026, and this time the cancer had spread. Julie’s goal was to make it to her 60th birthday, but unfortunately after an 18-month battle, Julie missed out on her birthday by two months.

Everyone who knew Julie knew of her love of walking mountains – specifically Pen Y fan. To celebrate her life and her 60th birthday, her family and friends decided to walk Pen Y fan in her honour and raise money for Velindre💚

Thank you to Julie's family for sharing her story with us and giving us just a small insight to what an amazing light she was in all of your lives. The funds you have raised will go on to support patients and families in similar positions to your own – and we are truly grateful that you chose to give back in such a special way.

What seemed impossible in cancer care 25 years ago is changing lives today. 💚

During her 25 years as a clinical oncologist at Velindre, Professor Mererid Evans has witnessed and contributed to remarkable breakthroughs in cancer treatment, from more targeted radiotherapy to immunotherapy drugs and cancer vaccines.

These advances are helping people live longer lives, while reducing the side effects of treatment. As Professor Mererid explains, the improvements we're seeing today are made possible through relentless research and innovation - a lot of which is made possible through your support.⭐

The impact reaches far beyond Wales.
The studies and clinical trials taking place at Velindre contribute to the global effort against cancer, helping improve care for future generations of patients.

Didn’t know if I’d be doing Cardiff Half Marathon this year but after not finishing IRONMAN UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I had unfinished business so I give it a bash and come out with a huge 5 minute PB. I’ve never got anywhere near getting under 1.30 so to run a 1.29 today was huuuuge for me! This is a great event with amazing support all away around the city!
