Major adaptations can help make your home safer 🏠

It’s important that your home is a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and independent. Major adaptations around your home can help if you’re experiencing difficulties with balance, mobility, or everyday tasks.

Your home should be a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and independent. If you’re experiencing difficulties with balance, mobility, or everyday tasks, the right changes can make a big difference to your daily life.

Major adaptations are more significant changes to your home, such as installing ramps, creating wet rooms, widening doorways, or relocating toilets.

These adaptations usually take longer to complete and can be more costly but can also make a huge difference to your independence and ensure you can move around your home and garden safely.

Our Care & Repair caseworkers will always do their best to help you find funding for the work you need.

We cannot guarantee that the exact same adaptation will be available in your area, as funding, materials, suppliers and contractors vary from region to region. Contact your local Care & Repair to find out what is possible in your area - https://careandrepair.org.uk/our-agencies/

Minor adaptation can help make your home safer 🏠

It’s important that your home is a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and independent. Minor adaptations around your home can help if you’re experiencing difficulties with balance, mobility, or everyday tasks and these can have the biggest impact.

These improvements are usually quick to install and low-cost, helping you stay safe without disruption to your daily routine. Examples include handrails, grab rails, and banisters. Other useful additions might be key safes, sofa raisers, and shower seats.

Add your voice to our call for a Safety Net Grant 📝

Serious housing disrepair threatens lives and puts avoidable strain on health and social care services in Wales 🏠

That's why our key ask for the Welsh Government is to implement a Safety-Net Grant to fix the worst cases of disrepair.

Every day, Care & Repair sees older people who cannot afford to get repair works done and where there are no funding solutions available. This leaves people living in poor housing, which can massively impact health, well-being, and ability to live safely and independently at home.

People like Mrs Thomas from Newport 👇

Mrs Thomas contacted Care & Repair because her lights were not working properly. When the caseworker did a Healthy Homes Check, they found that the wiring in her house was very old and in poor condition. The fuse board had scorch marks around the fuses, and large appliances could not be used together. The lights on the first floor were not working, and the condition of the wiring was so bad that it was considered a Category 1 hazard, meaning it could cause a fire.

The Care & Repair caseworker was able to get £2,500 of benevolent funding from SSAFA (the Armed Forces charity). However, the total cost for the rewiring was £3,360, meaning there was still a shortfall of £860. This left Mrs Thomas living in an unsafe property. A Safety-Net Grant would have provided the necessary funds to complete this work, improve the home energy efficiency and keep Mrs Thomas safe.
