Get Involved: Healthy Homes Appeal 😊

Our Healthy Homes Appeal is off to a fantastic start with lots of great fundraising activity already underway. From half-marathons, cake bake sales, skydiving, World Cup Sweepstake, walking challenges to fancy dress bike rides, supporters are getting involved in creative and fun ways. The Care & Repair Cymru team are walking 3,300 miles by the end of June 🚶‍♂️

Now it’s your turn to get involved. Whether at work or with friends and family, you can have fun while helping older people in Wales stay safe, warm and independent in their own homes.

It’s a sad fact that right now, in Wales, there are many older and vulnerable people living in cold, damp, and unsafe homes because they simply cannot afford essential repairs. This puts lives at risk, causes mental health challenges and makes existing health problems worse. But with your support we can make homes healthier and give people dignity, stability, and hope.

We’re asking for your help. Could you:

• Organise a fundraising event for your work colleagues or friends, such as a cake sale, coffee morning, sponsored challenge, World cup Sweepstake or a skydive.

Congratulations to our Head of Business Development, Jack, who completed the Swansea Half Marathon on Sunday 🥳

Jack is raising funds for our Healthy Homes Appeal because right now in Wales there are many older and vulnerable people living in cold, damp, and unsafe homes because they simply cannot afford essential repairs. These conditions can put lives at risk, as well as cause mental health challenges and make existing health problems worse.

Our Healthy Homes Appeal is raising funds that will pay for repairs in homes where people have nowhere else to turn. Every penny raised will go into a dedicated hardship fund that will be used to help people who are most in need.

Help Fix Homes. Change Lives in Wales 🏡

Right now in Wales there are many older and vulnerable people living in cold, damp, and unsafe homes.

Sandra's Story 💚

When 64-year-old Sandra and her husband faced the daunting reality of a collapsed lounge floor, they were left living in unsafe conditions with nowhere to turn. Their insurance refused to cover the repairs, and other funding options were closed.

Despite ongoing health issues and limited financial support, a Care & Repair caseworker stepped in arranging essential safety checks and securing funding through the Disrepair to Repair Fund.

That’s why we’ve launched our Healthy Homes Appeal to raise funds that will help pay for essential repairs in homes where people have nowhere else to turn. Every penny raised will go into a dedicated hardship fund that will be used to help people who are most in need.

Extra Help with Heating Costs for Oil and LPG Homes 📢

If your home is heated by oil or LPG, you may be eligible for extra support. In March 2026, the UK Government announced a new Oil and LPG Fuel Support Scheme to help low income households with rising heating costs.

✅ What support is available?

• A one off £200 payment to cover higher heating Oil or LPG costs

📋 How eligibility works

The Welsh Government will use:

🔘 Census data on homes using oil or LPG
🔘 The Council Tax Reduction Scheme (CTRS) register

If you’re eligible, you’ll be invited to apply. The scheme is open for up to six months, closing at the end of September 2026.

📨 How will you be contacted?

Households on CTRS will receive a letter from their Local Authority. If you think you’re eligible but haven’t heard anything, contact your Local Authority.

🏠 Not on CTRS register?

CTRS usually supports households on a low income or in receipt of certain benefits such as Universal Credit or Housing Benefit, or people living alone. It reduces and sometimes removes your Council Tax bill.

Making Your Home Safer 🏠

There are many ways to adapt your home to make it safer and easier to live in. If you have difficulties with balance or mobility, the right changes can make a big difference to your daily life.

Minor adaptations 💚

These are simple, low-cost improvements that can often be installed quickly. Examples include handrails, grab rails, and banisters. Other useful additions might be key safes, sofa raisers, and shower seats.

Major adaptations 💚

These involve more significant changes to your home, such as installing ramps, creating wet rooms, widening doorways, or relocating toilets. These adaptations usually take longer to complete and can be more costly.
