🌍🌈 Voices of Pride: Community Building and Activism in Africa

Across Africa, LGBTQ+ activists and communities are creating safe community spaces, challenging discrimination and oppression, and building movements for change. Their stories are powerful reminders of the importance of solidarity, resilience and hope.

In our latest blog marking Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️, we take a look at our Voices of Pride event earlier in the year which explored how community-building and activism are shaping lives and advancing LGBTQ+ rights across .

Read more:

LGBTQ+ people across Africa are facing worsening conditions, driven by the legacies of colonial-era laws and a growing rollback of hard-won rights. Hostile legislation and homophobic discourse, fuelled in part by the far-right in the West, are making life harder for LGBTQ+ communities across the con...

Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June to honour the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in the United States of America.

It’s about people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far lgbtq+ rights have come, even if in some places there’s still some work to be done.

Pride month is about teaching inclusion, tolerance and education in pride history, and continuing to move forward in equality.

It calls for people to remember how damaging homophobia was and still is.

It’s all about being proud of who you are no matter who you love.

🌳 Connecting Wales and Kenya through community-led climate action

Treeflights, based in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion, has been working with the Boré Green Umbrella community self-help group in Kenya for over 18 years, supported by the Wales and Africa Programme for more than 15 of those years.

Why it matters:
- Wales was the first country to industrialise the project, giving it a unique responsibility to address the climate harm caused by emissions
- Communities in Boré, southern Kenya, are experiencing severe desertification and climate impacts
- Tropical trees grow up to 10 times faster than in temperate regions, making Kenya one of the most effective places on earth for carbon drawdown

Through this partnership:
🌳 7.7 million trees planted, with capacity to grow 2.2 million annually
👩‍🌾 5,750 farmers supplied with trees (more than two-thirds of them being women)
🏫 200 schools supplied with trees and 7 classrooms built
♻️ Around 1 million household items diverted from landfill in Wales through Climate Shops
👐 150 volunteer roles created and 100+ exchange visits between Wales and Kenya facilitated

The Climate Shops are at the heart of the model, helping people in Wales understand the links between everyday consumption and global climate responsibility, while funding community-led tree planting in Kenya.

- Mae coed trofannol yn tyfu hyd at 10 gwaith yn gyflymach nag mewn rhanbarthau tymherus

Drwy'r bartneriaeth hon:
🌳 7.7 miliwn o goed wedi'u plannu, gyda’r gallu i dyfu 2.2 miliwn yn flynyddol
👩‍🌾 5,750 o ffermwyr wedi'u cyflenwi gyda choed (gyda dros ddwy ran o dair ohonynt yn fenywod)
🏫 200 o ysgolion wedi'u cyflenwi â choed a 7 ystafell ddosbarth wedi'u hadeiladu
♻️ Tua 1 miliwn o eitemau cartref wedi'u datgyfeirio o safleoedd tirlenwi yng Nghymru drwy’r Siopau Hinsawdd
👐 150 o rolau gwirfoddoli wedi'u greu a dros 100 o ymweliadau cyfnewid rhwng Cymru a Kenya wedi'u hwyluso

At our International Women's Day celebration, we heard from Aileen Burmeister, Head of Fair Trade Wales - Cymru Masnach Deg, on what 2026 holds for women in fair trade.

Women make up a significant proportion of farmers within the fair trade movement, yet many face persistent barriers around land ownership, access to sales and markets, and financial literacy. These are not small challenges. They are structural inequalities that limit what women can earn, own and decide for themselves.

This year, the United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognising the vital role women play in agrifood systems and the urgent need to address the obstacles they face.

Fair Trade Wales will be doing more this year to raise awareness and support women farmers, follow them to keep up with their work🌍

Yn ystod ein dathliad Diwrnod Rhyngwladol y Menywod, fe glywsom wrth Aileen Burmeister, Pennaeth Cymru Masnach Deg, ar yr hyn sydd gan 2026 i gynnig menywod ym masnach deg.

Mae menywod yn ffurfio cyfran sylweddol o ffermwyr o fewn y mudiad masnach deg, ond mae llawer yn wynebu rhwystrau parhaus o ran perchnogaeth tir, mynediad at farchnadoedd a llythrennedd a***nnol. Eleni, mae'r Cenhedloedd Unedig wedi dynodi 2026 yn Flwyddyn Ryngwladol y Ffermwraig, gan gydnabod y rôl hanfodol y mae menywod yn chwarae mewn systemau bwyd-amaeth.

Bydd Cymru Masnach Deg yn gwneud mwy eleni i godi ymwybyddiaeth a chefnogi ffermwyr benywaidd. Dilynwch nhw i gadw lan gyda’r wybodaeth ddiweddaraf am eu gwaith🌍
