Kyle's Goal Did you know that there is no paediatric rehabilitation centre anywhere in Wales or the South West that deals with children's brain injuries?

Kyle Beere was a typically fit, healthy, intelligent and active twelve year old boy. On 14th November 2009 he asked to be taken to the accident and emergency unit at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, due to a severe headache and quickly slipped into unconsciousness. What was unknown at the time was that he was suffering a massive brain haemorrhage caused by a rare condition called Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM). Everything that we take for granted like walking, talking, eating etc. has been taken away from Kyle by this cruel twist of fate. When advised that he would require intense Rehab, Kyle’s family then thought that his rehabilitation would take place at either the UHW the neuro centre of excellence for Wales (adults only) or at the long established rehabilitation centre at nearby Rookwood Hospital (www.headwaycardiff.org). To their astonishment they were told that the new Children's hospital at UHW has not included neurorehab in their facility and Rookwood hospital only accepts patients of 16 years or older. Furthermore, they were told that the NHS does not cater for the rehab of brain-injured children ANYWHERE within Wales and the South West. Kyle's family were told that the nearest suitable facility was at The Childrens Trust in Tadworth, Surrey (www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk), but this specialist facility is limited to 49 spaces. It is also 160 miles (3 hours) away from Kyle’s friends and family. Although Kyle attend The Children's Trust for just over 8 months and gained such amazing rehab and support from them (www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk) he still returned to Cardiff with a lack of ongoing support, rehab and services that understand his needs. The family have fought since his return home in March 2011, to gain the adequate care Kyle needs at home, school and in the community. This has come at a great cost to Kyle's health and well being. Our decision to relaunch on the 5 year anniversary of Kyle's Brain Injury is because we feel that young people in his situation along with their families should not have to suffer further, following the biggest life change anyone could ever imagine. Please support us to Build a Rehabilitation Centre in Wales for Young People with Brain Injuries. Your awareness and support is needed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. A true Legend.
