Action for Children Cymru

This week, Action for Children was proud to lead a group of 42 charities calling on the UK government to protect disabled young people and support pathways into meaningful employment, education, volunteering or training, in the context of the Young People and Work review and Alan Milburn's final report, expected this autumn.

We wrote a letter to the Secretary of Work & Pensions, Pat McFadden MP - which featured in the Guardian - urging him not to impose tougher benefit sanctions or cuts on disabled young people. We know the evidence, which shows that cutting benefits worsens health and deepens poverty, while strict conditionality and sanctions is particularly counterproductive and harmful for disabled people.

Instead, we think the government should make key principles the foundation of its reform agenda:
🗣️ A support conversation with a dedicated specialist adviser with specific expertise in disability, neurodiversity and mental health
🛞 A range of proven programmes designed and delivered locally for disabled young people with complex barriers to participation, based around intensive, holistic and trauma-informed support
🩺 Earlier intervention, including improved access to mental health support and earlier identification of young people at risk of disengagement.
🏋‍♀️ A strengthened Right to Try Guarantee
🛣️ Guaranteed pathways into work, training and other valuable forms of social participation, like volunteering.

Together, we know what works for disabled young people. The right support at the right time can be transformative.

A place to call their own... but why? 🏠

Anyone thinking about fostering will have seen that a key requirement is to have a spare room. But it's much more than just a requirement.

For many children and young people, having a room of their own provides comfort, stability and a sense of belonging during a time of change. It's a safe space where they can relax, feel secure and truly be themselves.

Being able to choose where their furniture goes, display photos or put posters on the walls can help them feel at home and part of the family.

A spare room isn't just an extra room. It's a place a young person can call their own. 🏡

From the vast Atlantic Ocean to making a real difference at home. 🌊❤️

We're delighted to hand over a cheque for £18,000, raised during our 3,000-mile Atlantic rowing challenge.

Completing the row was a life-changing experience, but knowing that the journey has helped raise these vital funds makes every mile worthwhile.

For a small charity like Sea Trust Wales, donations of this size can have a truly transformative impact. The funding will help support their vital work protecting and promoting marine wildlife, educating future generations, and inspiring people to value and care for our coastal environment. It also provides the confidence and resources needed to continue making a difference in our communities.
