The Dusty Shed

The Dusty Shed The Dusty Shed So what is the Shed? It is only limited by peoples imagination (one shed in France is restoring a WW2 tank!).

Based around the Men In Sheds principle, an initiative that is well established in Australia and Ireland, the “Shed” is basically somewhere for generally men to go to undertake practical activities such as wood work, metal work, electronics or anything else that those attending wish to do. Although primarily aimed at older men as it has been shown that this section of society are particularly susc

eptible to depression etc as they move from employment to retirement, and particularly for whatever reason they find themselves on their own, it is open to all. This project aims to get us out of the house/flat, meeting others and making friends, learning new skills, utilising existing ones, sharing these skills and making a positive contribution to the community and others.

Our Dusty Shed team has been hard at work building new Community Library Boxes for St Fagans.

Commissioned by St Fagans Community Council, these boxes will help local people share books, pick up a new read, and enjoy a simple community resource right on their doorstep.

A Bright New Purpose
What do you do with an item that holds so much meaning? The Dusty Shed help Rose convert a cot into a Garden Bench.
Read Rose’s story on our website -

In June 2024, Rose’s baby son, Lawin, sadly passed away. Rose held onto his cot bed, unable to part with it. Its value and the memories it held were something she couldn’t let go of. “It was in the garage, collecting dust,” Rose says. “I just couldn’t let it go.”  Over time, Rose bega...

Back in July, Jill got in touch with us at The Dusty Shed. Her late husband, Leighton, had always loved carpentry. He spent hours in his shed making beautiful things — dolls’ houses, children’s toys, and wood-turned bowls. When Leighton sadly passed away in March, he left a few wishes close to...

Great to welcome Alex Barros-Curtis, MP for Cardiff West, to The Dusty Shed on Tuesday 29th July!

Alex has been out meeting community groups across the area — and we were glad to show him some of the great local projects we’re involved in.

He also visited Action in Caerau and Ely’s Diana Garden Project in Ely (originally opened by Princess Diana in 1993!).

We’re proud to have supported local garden projects with woodwork projects – building stronger communities, one plank at a time!

Bob’s Story – Finding Purpose at the Dusty Shed

With a little help from fellow Shed member Ian, Bob made a flower hanger for his home - but what he really built was a renewed sense of purpose.
“Coming here gave me structure. The camaraderie is brilliant — it’s like going to work again.”
