We are a not-for-profit organisation that raises awareness of self-harm in young people, promoting creative and positive ways of dealing with the bad days.

Self-harm affects around 1 in 12 young people, yet it remains an issue people struggle to handle or understand. Heads Above The Waves is a not-for-profit organisation that raises awareness of self-harm in young people, promoting creative and positive ways of dealing with the bad days. We talk openly about self-harm and depression. We sell merch with a message behind the designs. We run workshops to give people the chance to find what works for them. We create content to let people know that hope and help exist. Why do we do it? Because we've been there ourselves, and we've come out the other side. You're not alone.

The besties in have a cracker of a new record out, and have just started their North American tour, so now feels like a perfect time to share the chat we had with when he was headlining with this summer.

We talked about staying mentally healthy on tour, and while back home too, and loved Lucas’ take on finding the little pieces of home to keep you feeling connected wherever you are in the world. 🖤

Today is - and I wanted to try and capture a few thoughts around the theme of “Start The Conversation” - I think I’ve kinda rambled a bit, and I’m not 100% certain this follows a cohesive arc. Maybe I’m overthinking a carousel post on IG. But the point I’m trying to get across with it is the fact that it’s okay to show up imperfectly. Having *a* conversation is better than waiting for the *perfect* conversation.

And if you’re feeling the weight of the world, and experiencing challenging emotions: I see you. I’ve been there. You’re allowed to feel feelings, and you do deserve to get help to navigate those feelings.

We loved reading over the messages to your younger selves from ArcTanGent - it’s a nice activity at a festival, but also a genuinely useful exercise. It’s class to look back and see how far you’ve come. All the things you’ve learned. All the growth & healing you’ve done. And legit, how you’re in a place that younger you might never have seen possible.
