✨EXCITING NEWS!✨

Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais / Our Path, Our Voice is a new community heritage and arts project led by Community Music Wales and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund - the UK’s largest funder for heritage, investing money raised by National Lottery players to connect people and communities with the past and ensure it is valued, cared for and sustained for future generations. We’re incredibly grateful for this support, which makes it possible for communities across South Wales to come together and bring this shared history to life.

The project will trace the historic journey of the Glamorganshire Canal - from the ironmaking landscapes of Merthyr Tydfil to the multicultural docklands of Cardiff. Once a vital artery of the Industrial Revolution, the canal carried coal and iron to the sea while bringing people from across the world to settle along its banks. Although much of it is now hidden beneath roads, buildings and parks, its legacy lives on through stories, communities, and the rich cultural diversity of the region.

Launching in Spring 2026 and running through to Winter 2027, communities along the canal’s route will take part in creative workshops exploring local heritage and will be held in places including Cyfarthfa, Aberfan, Abercynon, Pontypridd, Nantgarw, Taff’s Well, The Hayes and Butetown. Participants will create new music, share oral histories, and design vibrant carnival costumes inspired by canal life, industry and migration.

Andrew White, Director for Wales at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “This project will help reconnect communities with the rich heritage of South Wales. Thanks to National Lottery players, it will shine a light on the hidden stories of the Glamorganshire Canal, celebrate the diverse cultures shaped by its history and empower people to take pride in their collective past.”

A key partner, Butetown Arts & Culture Association, will lead the carnival arts programme and help shape the project’s final celebration. Butetown Carnival first emerged in the docklands community in the mid-1960s as a powerful celebration of Black culture and community identity. Revived in 2014 after a 16-year absence, it continues to play a vital role in celebrating the heritage and diversity of one of the UK’s oldest multicultural communities. Through this project, that legacy will be carried forward, with participants contributing their own creative work to this long-standing cultural tradition.

The journey will culminate in a major final procession from The Hayes to Butetown, symbolically following the canal’s path to the sea and joining the energy, colour and spirit of Butetown Carnival - bringing together music, movement and storytelling in a shared public celebration.

Sarah Smith, Director of Community Music Wales, said: “We’re thrilled to receive support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for this exciting project. Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais / Our Path, Our Voice will bring communities together to explore and celebrate their shared heritage through creativity.”

This is a journey of rediscovery - reconnecting communities with their past while celebrating the voices and cultures that continue to shape South Wales today.

Follow us to be part of the journey - we’ll be sharing stories, music, and behind-the-scenes moments as the project unfolds across South Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️

Mae Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais / Our Path, Our Voice yn brosiect treftadaeth a chelfyddydau cymunedol newydd dan arweiniad Cerddoriaeth Gymunedol Cymru a gefnogir gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol - cyllidwr treftadaeth mwyaf y DU, sy'n buddsoddi a***n a godir gan chwaraewyr y Loteri Genedlaethol i gysylltu pobl a chymunedau â'r gorffennol a sicrhau ei fod yn cael ei werthfawrogi, ei ofalu amdano a'i gynnal ar gyfer cenedlaethau'r dyfodol. Rydym yn hynod ddiolchgar am y gefnogaeth hon, sy'n ei gwneud hi'n bosibl i gymunedau ledled De Cymru ddod ynghyd a dod â'r hanes a rennir hwn yn fyw.

Bydd y prosiect yn olrhain taith hanesyddol Camlas Sir Forgannwg - o dirweddau gwneud haearn Merthyr Tudful i ddociau amlddiwylliannol Caerdydd. Ar un adeg yn rhydweli hanfodol i'r Chwyldro Diwydiannol, cludodd y gamlas glo a haearn i'r môr wrth ddod â phobl o bob cwr o'r byd i ymgartrefu ar hyd ei glannau. Er bod llawer ohoni bellach wedi'i chuddio o dan ffyrdd, adeiladau a pharciau, mae ei hetifeddiaeth yn parhau trwy straeon, cymunedau, ac amrywiaeth ddiwylliannol gyfoethog y rhanbarth.

Gan lansio yng Ngwanwyn 2026 a pharhau hyd at Gaeaf 2027, bydd cymunedau ar hyd llwybr y gamlas yn cymryd rhan mewn gweithdai creadigol yn archwilio treftadaeth leol a byddant yn cael eu cynnal mewn mannau gan gynnwys Cyfarthfa, Aberfan, Abercynon, Pontypridd, Nantgarw, Ffynnon Taf, Yr Ais a Butetown. Bydd cyfranogwyr yn creu cerddoriaeth newydd, yn rhannu hanesion llafar, ac yn dylunio gwisgoedd carnifal bywiog wedi'u hysbrydoli gan fywyd camlesi, diwydiant a mudo.

Dywedodd Andrew White, Cyfarwyddwr Cymru yng Nghronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol: “Bydd y prosiect hwn yn helpu i ailgysylltu cymunedau â threftadaeth gyfoethog De Cymru. Diolch i chwaraewyr y Loteri Genedlaethol, bydd yn taflu goleuni ar straeon cudd Camlas Sir Forgannwg, yn dathlu'r diwylliannau amrywiol a luniwyd gan ei hanes ac yn grymuso pobl i ymfalchïo yn eu gorffennol cyfunol.”

Bydd partner allweddol, Cymdeithas Celfyddydau a Diwylliant Butetown, yn arwain rhaglen gelfyddydau'r carnifal ac yn helpu i lunio dathliad olaf y prosiect. Daeth Carnifal Butetown i'r amlwg gyntaf yng nghymuned y dociau yng nghanol y 1960au fel dathliad pwerus o ddiwylliant Du a hunaniaeth gymunedol. Wedi'i adfywio yn 2014 ar ôl absenoldeb o 16 mlynedd, mae'n parhau i chwarae rhan hanfodol wrth ddathlu treftadaeth ac amrywiaeth un o gymunedau amlddiwylliannol hynaf y DU. Drwy'r prosiect hwn, bydd yr etifeddiaeth honno'n cael ei chario ymlaen, gyda chyfranogwyr yn cyfrannu eu gwaith creadigol eu hunain at y traddodiad diwylliannol hirhoedlog hwn.

Bydd y daith yn cyrraedd uchafbwynt mewn gorymdaith derfynol fawr o'r Hayes i Butetown, gan ddilyn llwybr y gamlas i'r môr yn symbolaidd ac ymuno ag egni, lliw ac ysbryd Carnifal Butetown - gan ddod â cherddoriaeth, symudiad ac adrodd straeon ynghyd mewn dathliad cyhoeddus a rennir.

Dywedodd Sarah Smith, Cyfarwyddwr Cerddoriaeth Gymunedol Cymru: “Rydym wrth ein bodd yn derbyn cefnogaeth gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol ar gyfer y prosiect cyffrous hwn. Bydd Camlas: Ein Llwybr, Ein Llais / Our Path, Our Voice yn dod â chymunedau ynghyd i archwilio a dathlu eu treftadaeth a rennir drwy greadigrwydd.”

Mae hon yn daith o ailddarganfod - ailgysylltu cymunedau â'u gorffennol wrth ddathlu'r lleisiau a'r diwylliannau sy'n parhau i lunio De Cymru heddiw.

Dilynwch ni i fod yn rhan o'r daith - byddwn yn rhannu straeon, cerddoriaeth, ac eiliadau y tu ôl i'r llenni wrth i'r prosiect ddatblygu ledled De Cymru🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️
