“If you tolerate this, your children will be next.” 18 July 2026 marks 90 years since the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War over 1936-39. This morning Cymru Global spoke to BBC Radio Wales’ breakfast programme about this defining story of Welsh internationalism, that continues to shape the national psyche to this day:

For Wales, this was never a distant war – it drew miners from the valleys to the battlefields of Spain, and brought the children of bombed Guernica and Bilbao into Welsh homes. Nearly 200 Welsh volunteers joined the International Brigades, of whom at least 33-35 died in Spain. 230 Basque children fled to Wales and were offered sanctuary by communities in Caerleon (Newport), Sketty (Swansea), Brechfa (Carmarthenshire) and Old Colwyn (Denbighshire).

90 years on, the Welsh story of Spain is both warning and warming: a warning of the dangers when society tolerates authoritarian ‘strong men’ figures who drive division, contrasted with the warming inspiration of ordinary communities choosing solidarity over indifference: a solidarity not ‘granted by government’ or media, but driven from grassroots communities upwards. That heritage of internationalism is exactly what Wales’ Temple of Peace was built to inspire, and Cymru Global seeks to champion for the future.

🚨NEXT OF KIN APPEAL: Can you help us trace the families of these fallen heroes?

The Council’s Heritage Service are appealing for help to trace the next of kin or living relatives of three WWI personnel buried in Trealaw Cemetery.

Following recent research, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has identified these individuals as serving personnel whose graves are to be marked with Commission headstones.

CWGC is now in the process of producing headstones for their graves, and we would like to help identify any living family members connected to them.

100 years ago, over 29 June to 3 July 1926, the world came to west Wales as Aberystwyth University hosted the International Congress of the League of Nations - stepping in at last minute when the planned venue of Dresden, Germany fell through with just weeks to go. The Congress left a lifelong impression on hundreds of delegates from 40 countries, an Ambassador recounting in his memoirs many years later:

"Such generous hospitality, and such sympathy on the part of all classes of the population, we never met with in the same degree as in Wales. At Aberystwyth, the whole town turned out to do us honour, the streets and railway station lavishly decked with flags... as the admirable special train placed at our disposal drew in. The population greeted our arrival, and watched our negotiations with extreme interest; so many people attended the public meetings that the hall, with seating for 3,000, was overfull. No one would have believed that the interest [in world peace] among the large masses of the inhabitants - and especially among the students - would be so great." (Memoirs of Count Bernstorff)

1926 Women’s Peace Pilgrimage - panel discussion hosted by Academi Heddwch Cymru and Llafur: Welsh People's History Society.

Join us for a bilingual panel discussion to celebrate the centenary of the 1926 Women's Peace Pilgrimage.

In the summer of 1926, tens of thousands of women across the United Kingdom marched to the centre of London under the banner 'Law not War', urging the British government to commit to international arbitration and universal disarmament. These peace pioneers walked through villages and towns, organising over a thousand meetings and rallies along the way to share their vision of a warless world.

Learn about the extraordinary history of the Peace Pilgrimage in a Welsh context as we hear contributions from our panellists Dr Siân Rhiannon Williams, Annie Williams and Heather Aspinwall on the history of the north Wales march – by far the biggest contingent of the Pilgrimage; its local activity at Llangollen and, finally, the hidden histories of the lesser-known south Wales route to London.
