'Baystone Kops'. Our visit to the South Wales Police Heritage Centre.

We visited the museum, tracing the heritage of the South Wales Police, which is housed in their headquarters at Bridgend, and spent a couple of informative hours with curator Melanie. We even tried solve a couple of crimes (or not) with the help of the latest technology.

Unfortunately the facial recognition device flagged up President Angela as a person of interest in Interpol's office in New York and she was caught bang to rights. Let's hope she gets bail for the SGM next week!

Wrap Up Cardiff.

Now in our fourth year, this annual collection of coats by all 8 Cardiff Rotary clubs, plus Abergavenny, Brynmawr and Cowbridge has again collected over 1,250 good quality warm coats for the needy in Cardiff, and on this occasion in Newport.

This is an excellent project bringing together many Rotary volunteers to collect the coats in many locations, sort them at the YMCA Y Plas, Roath, and distribute to local homeless charities - to be worn and not sold.

The Ukraine Hub - Yma o Hyd.

We were invited to attend the official launch of the Ukrainian Hub at their new premises in Cardiff, opened by the First Minister, Eluned Morgan. They should now be secure in these premises for a number of years thanks to the generosity of local enterprises and the incredible hard work of Helen McAdie.

We were also treated a few songs by the children's choir, including 'Yma o Hyd' sung in Ukrainian.

The hub is incredibly important in ensuring that 3 years into the war raging at home the families who have been displaced from their homeland can support each other and retain their identities.

District Governor's visit.

We were pleased to welcome DG Ian Hughes to the club recently to listen to his aspirations for the current year and for the future. Ian spoke eloquently about how we need to evolve and how Rotary continues to successfully address the world's most difficult humanitarian challenges.

We are great supporters of The Rotary Foundation and he was joined by District Rotary Foundation Lead Ray Bevan to present banners reflecting the contribution we have made during the past year.

We award Dr Nicci Maxwell with a Paul Harris Fellowship for her tireless work in South Sudan.

Congratulations Nicci on your award. Conditions in South Sudan are extreme on any measure - climate, conflict, poverty, corruption and welfare. In particular South Sudan's chances of survival for mothers and newborn babies are the most desperate.

Currently, Nicci spends just over half her week in the neonatal ward at Al Sabbah Children’s Hospital in Juba, which is South Sudan’s national referral hospital for children.

The rest of the week is divided between general paediatric clinics in a UN camp for refugees from the war in Sudan as well as various other clinics and activities focussed on trying to unite medically complex children with the life-changing or life-saving services they need but struggle to access in the world’s newest and poorest country.

Cardiff Bay Rotary made some funds available to assist one young girl, Amana, undertake life changing surgery and were delighted that Nicci could find time to come and thank us.

We were also delighted to welcome Israa Mohammed, Chair of Global Health Partnerships Cymru, herself a native of Sudan.

Visit to Cardiff Bay Barrage Control and inauguration of our bench at the Tiny Forest.

Thanks you Chris, who manages the Barrage for Cardiff Harbour Authority, for an excellent presentation on the benefits brought to South Wales by the building of this barrage over 25 years ago.

Also to Steve and his team who look after the environment for arranging and installing the bench which gives welcome respite to weary passers by.
