School summer holidays give us an opportunity to make some upgrades and have a bit of a clear out at the Cardiff office in preparation for the next academic year. 🤗

We would like to extend a heartfelt message of solidarity with all teachers, staff and families affected by the imposed but mightily opposed closure of Manorbier VC Church in Wales Primary School. The school has been permanently closed by Pembrokeshire Council despite opposition across the board.

The school's closure comes as its dedicated headteacher, Sharon Davies, has been awarded, 'Teacher of the Year.'

NASUWT Cymru wishes to pay a very warm tribute to all involved in trying to save Manorbier. Its history dates back 153 years.

Following the LA's failure to rebuild of part of the school that perished in a fire in October 2022, and after all this community has been through and the strength, unity and love shown, we agree wholeheartedly with the Friends of Manorbier School. In their farewell message, they say that this extraordinary spirit will endure beyond the school's closure. Long may that community spirit continue.

When all who know and love the school said such a categoric 'NO' to its closure, the Council's decision leaves unanswered questions in our heads and great sadness in our hearts.

We wish all involved the very best on their new paths ahead.

We spent a wonderful sunny day yesterday in Brecon celebrating the outstanding athletic achievements of some truly inspiring young people at the WSAA Athletics Championships, proudly sponsored by NASUWT Cymru.

Our Senior Vice-President, Dannielle Hillidge, had the pleasure of presenting the medals to these talented young athletes.

Treuliwyd diwrnod hyfryd a heulog ddoe ym Mrecon yn dathlu llwyddiannau athletaidd rhagorol pobl ifanc wirioneddol ysbrydoledig ym Mhencampwriaethau Athletau CAYC, a noddwyd yn falch gan NASUWT Cymru.

Cafodd ein Huwch Is-lywydd, Dannielle Hillidge, y fraint o gyflwyno'r medalau i'r athletwyr ifanc dawnus hyn.

👀 The largest union for teachers in Wales…and we’re just getting started.

This year’s NASUWT Cymru Conference was full of powerful speeches, emotional moments, and plenty of new faces.

As members celebrated their achievements and made plans for the year ahead, all eyes were on NASUWT. We were visited by the BBC/S4C and ITV. Our motion calling for a national framework to track violent incidents in schools was covered in press across the country. Meanwhile, we celebrated the news that more than half of teachers in Wales are NASUWT members.

NASUWT Cymru is more than just a trade union for teachers; we're at the centre of influence in education. Above all that, we are a family. We take care of each other, advocate for each other, and work hard to make the education system a better place for everyone.

Congratulations to new President Andrew Morgan, and to all of the amazing speakers and motion writers.

During a very successful conference weekend where we welcomed delegates from across Wales and the home nations, motions on the following topics were debated:
○ Sickness absence policies;
○ Teachers' mental health & wellbeing;
○ The role of ESTYN;
○ Toilet facilities in schools;
○ Sexual harassment in the workplace;
○ Mock inspections;
○ Exploitation of supply teachers;
○ The qualifications 'fiasco';
○ Additional learning needs;
○ NEA's and workload;
○ The reporting of violent incidents in schools;
○ Engagement committees in schools;
○ Abolition of LMS;
○ Violent incidents in schools;
○ The abuse of support plans;
○ Clearer guidance on the carrying of weapons in schools.

If you feel strongly about any of these issues and would like to become active within your local association, speak with your school rep or local association secretary. You can also contact the Cardiff office ([email protected]) if you would like an organiser to visit your school and speak with members about the benefits of having an elected workplace rep.
