Empowering diverse women and communities in Wales. The organisation has moved on since, expanding its services.

Our History:

Women Connect First was established in March 2001 to empower Black & Minority Ethnic women in Cardiff and South East Wales by offering a range of services and training in order to improve livelihoods and employability. At present we cater for a wider client group and offer a range of services including advice, advocacy, counselling, and a wide range of training programmes and volunteering opportunities amongst others. We target disadvantaged, isolated and marginalised communities, who are experiencing multiple layers of depravation, discrimination and exclusion in accessing services and employment. "Our mission is to empower and improve the lives of disadvantaged communities in South Wales, to help them realise their full potential and make a positive contribution to Welsh society."

National Hate Crime Awareness Week – Community Safety & Shwmae Day! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿💐

This Friday at WCF we welcomed Bernie and Tori from our local Canton/Riverside Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) for an informative and engaging session on hate crime awareness and community safety.

The session raised awareness about recognising and reporting hate crime, empowering women with the knowledge and confidence to speak up, support one another, and help keep our communities safe.

We also had a wonderful time celebrating Shwmae Day by learning Welsh words and greetings, adding a fun and cultural element to our session! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿✨

A huge thank you to Bernie and Tori for sharing their knowledge, encouraging open discussions, and making the session interactive, informative, and engaging. Your support helps empower women to recognise hate crime, understand the importance of reporting it, and contribute to building safer communities.

💜 Together, we can challenge hate, celebrate diversity, promote respect, and create safer, stronger, and more inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and protected.

At Women Connect First, we are committed to empowering women, championing equality and inclusion, and creating opportunities for women from all backgrounds to have their voices heard, their contributions recognised and their potential realised.

Being part of this important occasion was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the diversity, unity and shared aspirations that make Wales special, and to reaffirm the importance of building a society where everyone feels valued, represented and included.

We have a new programme for young women and women aged 16–49 from diverse ethnic communities

Whether you want to get more active, learn about your health, meet new people or simply have a safe space to talk this is for you! 🤗

Kicking off the programme we have Yoga sessions! Starting Thursdays 10.30am-11.30am at St Marys Hall

Whether you’re a beginner or a regular yogi, everyone is welcome! 💕

Our beautiful Clare Gardens is full of life, colour and goodness with rosemary, beetroots, cherry tomatoes, aubergines, chillies, and so many beautiful flowers and plants bringing the garden to life. 🌱🍅🌶️🌺

We’re absolutely delighted to announce that Women Connect First has been nominated for the Community Champion Award at the Mastering Diversity Awards 2026! 🏆

This recognition celebrates something we care deeply about — supporting women and their families, creating opportunities, bringing communities together and making a positive difference in women’s lives.

Our work has always been about more than projects or programmes. It’s about creating spaces where women feel included, supported, valued and empowered to take part, connect with others and thrive.✨

Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to work alongside so many inspiring women, families, volunteers, organisations, funders and community partners. Every person who has supported us, shared our vision, volunteered their time, taken part in an activity or simply encouraged what we do has played a part in this achievement.

💜 Golden Years – Let’s Age Well 💜

What a fantastic turnout at our weekly physical activity sessions! 🙌✨

From MIMA (Movement Inspired by Martial Arts) and Zumba Gold, to Live Well Age Well and Pilates, our Golden Years sessions are all about moving more, feeling good, having fun and connecting with others.

📍 Sessions take place every week across Riverside, Canton and Butetown, bringing our communities together and proving that it’s never too late to get active!
