Yn ddiweddar, gwelsom falwen lawchwith ddeuddant yng Nghoed Cwm George a Casehill. 🐌

Mae’r malwod bach hyn yn mwynhau cynefin coetir llaith ac yn mesur llai na darn 1c o hyd, gan dyfu i tua 10-12mm yn unig.

Maen nhw’n un o’r miloedd o rywogaethau sy’n dibynnu ar goetiroedd hynafol. 🌳

Ydych chi wedi gweld un o'r blaen?

---

We recently spotted a two toothed door snail at Cwm George & Casehill Woods. 🐌

These small snails enjoy a damp woodland habitat and measure smaller than a 1p coin in length, only growing to around 10-12mm!

They’re just one of thousands of species that depend on ancient woodlands. 🌳

Have you seen one before?

Burnt cakes or fungus?

King Alfred's Cakes (a fungi) grows all year round and is embarrassingly named after the king’s poor baking skills! Despite the name, this fungi isn't edible but does provide a habitat for many insects and small animals.

🍄‍🟫 It’s other common names you may recognise, include coal fungus, carbon fungus, cramp balls.

🍄‍🟫 They grow 2-10cm in diameter and have the appearance of puffy black lumps of coal or small burnt cakes.

🍄‍🟫 Spot them growing in broadleaf woodland where they can last for years.

Cacennau wedi llosgi neu ffwng?

Pelenni Duon! (ffwng) Mae’r ffwng hwn yn tyfu drwy gydol y flwyddyn ac mae wedi cael ei enw Saesneg ar ôl sgiliau pobi gwael y Brenin Alfred (King Alfred’s Cakes)! Er gwaethaf yr enw, dydy’r ffyngau ddim yn fwytadwy ond maen nhw’n gynefin i lawer o bryfed ac anifeiliaid bach.

🍄‍🟫 Mae’r enwau Saesneg eraill yn cynnwys coal fungus, carbon fungus, cramp balls, ond mae pelenni duon yn eu disgrifio i'r dim.

🍄‍🟫 Maen nhw’n tyfu 2-10cm mewn diamedr, ac yn edrych fel darnau o lo neu gacennau bach wedi llosgi.

🍄‍🟫 Mae’n bosib eu gweld mewn coetir llydanddail, lle maen nhw’n gallu para am flynyddoedd.

Over the last year, our team of 101 volunteers have made a tree-mendous impact across Wales. 🏴

🌳 3,659 hours removing invasive species, planting trees, and restoring our woodlands.

🌳 1,881 hours patrolling sites- keeping them clean and safe for everyone to enjoy!

🌳 3 community talks on ancient woodlands, delivered by our volunteer Brian.

🌳 2 volunteer led events at Cwm George and Clywedog trail.

🌳 1 historical researcher, uncovering how land was managed centuries ago - helping guide how we restore ancient landscapes today.

We’re incredibly lucky to have these brilliant people in our Coed Cadw team. 🙌

---

Dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae ein tîm o 101 o wirfoddolwyr wedi cael effaith pren-i-gamp ledled Cymru. 🏴

🌳 3,659 awr yn cael gwared ar rywogaethau goresgynnol, yn plannu coed ac yn adfer ein coetiroedd.

🌳 1,881 awr yn patrolio safleoedd - yn eu cadw’n lân ac yn ddiogel i bawb eu mwynhau!

🌳 3 sgwrs gymunedol ar goetiroedd hynafol, gan ein gwirfoddolwr, Brian.

🌳 2 ddigwyddiad dan arweiniad gwirfoddolwyr ar lwybr Cwm George a Chlywedog.

🌳 1 ymchwilydd hanesyddol, yn darganfod sut rheolwyd tir ganrifoedd yn ôl - gan helpu i lywio sut rydyn ni’n adfer tirweddau hynafol heddiw.

Rydyn ni’n hynod ffodus o gael y bobl wych hyn yn rhan o dîm Coed Cadw. 🙌

A big day for our six barn owlets at Brynau! 🫶

Yesterday, they were ringed and examined by a licensed Natural Resources Wales specialist.

Each one was weighed, measured, and their s*x recorded - vital data which will help monitor and better understand barn owl populations. 🦉

In doing so, we discovered that all six chicks are likely female! A key clue is brown spots on their underwing coverts, which even the youngest chick is beginning to show.

📍 Brynau Farm, Neath.

Diwrnod mawr i'n chwech o cywion tylluanod gwyn yn Brynau! 🫶

Ddoe, cafon nhw eu modrwyo ac archwilio gan arbenigwr trwyddedig o Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru.

Cafodd pob un ei bwysau, ei fesur, a'i rhyw ei gofnodi - data hanfodol a fydd yn helpu i fonitro a deall poblogaethau wyllt tylluanod gwyn yn well. 🦉

Wrth wneud hyn, darganfyddom fod yr chwech ohonynt yn debygol o fod yn benywod! Cliw allweddol yw smotiau brown ar y clustogau dan eu hadenydd, hyd yn oed mae'r cyw ieuengaf yn dechrau eu dangos.

A cherished woodland in Talgarth is now part of the National Forest for Wales, following a programme of access and conservation improvements.

Park Wood, cared for by Coed Cadw, has benefited from new and improved paths, step repairs and wider site enhancements made possible through The Woodland Investment Grant (TWIG), helping make the woodland more welcoming and accessible for visitors while supporting wildlife and outdoor learning.

TWIG is delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with the Welsh Government’s National Forest for Wales Programme.

The work has also created valuable opportunities for students from Black Mountains College, who have been working on site to help clear paths, repair steps and use timber from the woodland itself in practical conservation projects that build their land-based skills.

A new more accessible path has been introduced at the site and has already been well received by visitors.

Alongside improving access, work at Park Wood has also helped strengthen the site’s ecological value. Black Mountains College students have supported woodland management activity including the thinning of beech woodland, with early signs of positive impact for nature.

Woodland wildlife could be on our next banknotes! 🌳

With pine martens, barn owls and more on the shortlist, it’s a chance to highlight the species that depend on woodland habitat. 🦉

Which animal’s getting your vote?

The Bank of England is asking the public which animals should appear on future banknotes.

Sound on! 🔊

It’s dinnertime at the Brynau Farm barn owl nest.

While the noises might sound alarming, owlets make chittering or hissing noises, letting mum know they are ready for food!
