Update on the Cardiff Uni community led housing workshops we are holding (described in previous post below)….there will be a dissemination event in Sept 2024 with all welcome, but places are limited at workshops. We are interested in people who might want to get involved in helping setting up Co-op Dan Do. Please do get in touch if this might be for you. email is great or message here [email protected]. We're interested in using modular building for our housing units. The idea is small self contained private homes, but additionally a co-house offering larger meeting & party rooms, kitchen and other facilities and workshops we can share. For example, SO Modular in Neath are a local company developing modular units. Some of us went to visit the factory and also this Aberavon refit they're doing of old council flats. The modular one bed flats are beautifully insulated, and designed. Each one is made up of two units that fit on the back of a lorry. Down the line we expect these to be a reasonably cheap and sustainable way to build. SO Modular sources the wood for their frames locally and uses natural products to insulate.

Community led housing in South East Wales :

We are a not-for-profit community group wishing to own and develop land for collaborative housing and work space. We will set up afforable, low impact living in eco homes, set in a permaculture landscape designed for beauty, bio-diversity and food production.

Creating a community that aims to be inclusive, we are looking for people who share our dream of living together in collaboration within self-contained small homes.

As a group developing at least 50% afforable homes, we hope to unlock new sites for innovative development at the edge of a town or large village in SE Wales.

Community Led Housing workshops coming up! Co-op Dan Do are very excited to be working in partnership with Cardiff University and Cwmpas (formerly Wales Co-op Centre) to run three workshops and a dissemination event. We want to bring together the key players to explore the challenges and opportunities for Community Led Housing projects in Wales.

Workshop 1. Monday 4th March, 11-3pm: Benefits & Affordability
Workshop 2. Monday 15th April, 11-3pm: Land & Finance
Workshop 3. Monday 10th June, 11-3pm: Design & Governance
Dissemination event. September. date tbc

All workshops are free to join and will take place in Cardiff University.

We want to live with connection, both to our neighbours and to the land, so we're working out how to set up a community-led, affordable housing project in South East Wales. With around 20-30 small self-contained eco-homes to rent and buy, we will share a co-house for joint meals and activities along with outdoor space for food growing and fun.
