How do you achieve permanent, lasting change in Africa?

By finding local leaders and people and backing them with long-term partnerships and flexible investment, giving them the power to deliver change to the communities they live in.

In 2025, 44 grassroots Egmont Partners across six countries in sub-Saharan Africa delivered projects that strengthened resilience, improved health and created economic opportunities for more than 87,000 children, women and their families affected by HIV and poverty.

Living with HIV should not limit a young person’s future.

When Faith, 17, discovered she was born with HIV, support from Egmont Partner Kabangwe Creative Initiative Association (K.C.I.A.) helped her access guidance, care and opportunities to build her confidence and independence.

Today, Faith is managing her health, running her own business, and looking ahead with hope.

In the fight to reduce HIV rates among young people in Zimbabwe, Egmont partner Youth Advocates (YAZ) is reaching young people where they already are: on their mobile phones.

With support from Egmont, YAZ has established a free national helpline that young people can call or text to receive confidential and accessible HIV and STI advice, ongoing support and medical referrals.

Today, the helpline receives more than 300,000 calls a year, providing a vital lifeline to young people across Zimbabwe and helping to remove financial, geographical and social barriers to healthcare and HIV prevention services.

At the 2025 Egmont Awards, we celebrated two exceptional Egmont Partners who have made significant impact in their communities over the last 12 months.

And the winners are…

The Best Performing Organisation Award goes to Agri-Impact Malawi for their work supporting smallholder farmers, struggling with low productivity and food insecurity, to establish successful agri-businesses. Households that were formerly fully dependent on monocrop subsistence farming with little opportunity to generate surplus for income are diversifying, accessing structured markets and building reinvestment-based agricultural enterprises.

Kissa Rogers Mwangosi, Executive Director of Fanisi Tanzania Family was awarded the Most Inspiring Individual Award for her leadership which has transformed the lives of children and families in her community. Children have gained the confidence to stand up against abuse and exploitation, families have been equipped with the skills and resources to strengthen their livelihoods and parents are now better able to support their children and create safe, nurturing homes where young people can grow and thrive.

Congratulations to our award winners, and many thanks to everyone who joined us, and to all whose support continues to enable Egmont Partners to deliver permanent, sustainable impact.

Poverty hits girls the hardest.
It takes away choices - and childhoods.

Egmont Partner Orgz's garment-making training is giving girls and young women in Mwanza, Tanzania, the chance to shape their own futures.

For girls like Christina, learning to sew doesn't just open a door for income.
It means protection, agency and the power to make independent life choices - no longer driven by poverty.

"My dream is to use what I have learnt to support my family and empower other girls like me."

What would you do with 30 chickens?

Limata and her women’s group in Zambia turned them into a business opportunity.

They grew their flock and established two further income streams.

Today, they can provide their families with three meals a day and everything their children need for school.

It started with a small brood of hens, alongside training in poultry farming and business skills, delivered by Egmont Partner Keepers Zambia Foundation.

Small investments can lead to lasting change.

Insight: In the early 2000s, much of the population of sub-Saharan Africa remained outside the formal banking system. Today, the region stands at the forefront of digital financial innovation.

A pivotal driver has been the advent of mobile money. What began as an informal workaround, transferring ‘value' by sending airtime credit from phone to phone, was further developed by Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecoms provider, and Vodafone into a scalable financial model. Individuals could now store money in an e-wallet linked to their phone number, without need for a bricks and mortar bank account (which less than 6% of Kenyans had access to at the time), or even a smartphone.

The result has been transformational. Mobile money is now a sophisticated and mainstream global financial service, driving entrepreneurship, trade and financial stability for millions of people across Africa and beyond. It has opened access to financial systems for those historically excluded by distance, lack of documentation and low income.

While the reorganisation of USAID, alongside reductions in the UK’s and other European nations’ commitments, is having very real impacts on communities already under pressure, it could also provide an opportunity for greater localisation and direct funding, putting local actors back in the driving seat of development.
