For this week’s story from the community, we’re sharing an update from The Heritage Crafts Association, who received a large multi-year grant from the Ashley Family Foundation to support 3 young people with training bursaries focused on traditional heritage crafts 🎨

They’ve supported Emily from Llanfairfechan in millinery, Rae from Abergavenny in woodworking and timber conservation, and Dai from Beaumaris in blacksmithing – all pictured below!

The funding was able to provide qualifications and fund mentorship opportunities from leading practitioners, for those from marginalised backgrounds who may not have had the opportunities otherwise 🫶

The funding has not only supported individuals but has also substantially strengthened wider communities and professional networks.

Rae founded The Woodworkers Alliance, creating a network that connects historically excluded emerging makers with skilled mentors, ensuring that heritage skills are immediately disseminated to a broader community 🤝

Meanwhile, Dai’s professional growth directly impacts his local community – his long-term ambition is to use his new casting skills to restore the ironwork near his local UNESCO World Heritage Site and to teach blacksmithing at his local college 🧑‍🏫

By supporting these specific individuals, the Ashley Family Foundation is not only safeguarding at-risk heritage craft skills but creating active ambassadors who are dedicated to training, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of Welsh artisans 🖼️

Ar gyfer stori o’r gymuned yr wythnos hon, rydym yn rhannu diweddariad gan The Heritage Crafts Association, a dderbyniodd grant aml-flwyddyn sylweddol gan Ashley Family Foundation i gefnogi tri pherson ifanc gyda bwrsariaethau hyfforddi sy’n canolbwyntio ar grefftau treftadaeth traddodiadol 🎨

Maent wedi cefnogi Emily o Lanfairfechan mewn melino hetiau, Rae o’r Fenni mewn gwaith coed a chadwraeth pren, a Dai o Fiwmares mewn gwaith gof – llun o bob un isod!

Mae’r cyllid wedi sicrhau bod gan bobl y cyfle i dderbyn cymwysterau a chyfleodd mentora gan ymarferwyr blaenllaw – i bobl o gefndiroedd lleiafrifol, fydd efallai wedi colli allan ar gyfleoedd fel arall 🫶

Nid yn unig mae’r cyllid wedi cefnogi unigolion, ond mae hefyd wedi cryfhau cymunedau ehangach a rhwydweithiau proffesiynol yn sylweddol.

Sefydlodd Rae, The Woodworkers Alliance, gan greu rhwydwaith sy’n cysylltu gwneuthurwyr newydd sydd ar wahân yn hanesyddol, gyda mentoriaid medrus – gan sicrhau bod sgiliau treftadaeth yn cael eu rhannu’n uniongyrchol gyda’r gymuned ehangach 🤝

Yn y cyfamser, mae datblygiad proffesiynol Dai yn cael effaith uniongyrchol ar ei gymuned leol – ei uchelgais hirdymor yw defnyddio ei sgiliau castio newydd i adfer y gwaith haearn ger Safle Treftadaeth y Byd UNESCO lleol, ac i ddysgu gwaith gof yn ei goleg lleol 🧑‍🏫

Drwy gefnogi’r unigolion hyn yn benodol, mae Ashley Family Foundation nid yn unig yn diogelu sgiliau crefft treftadaeth sydd mewn perygl, ond hefyd yn creu llysgenhadon gweithredol sydd wedi ymrwymo i hyfforddi, mentora ac ysbrydoli’r genhedlaeth nesaf o grefftwyr Cymreig 🖼️

“Great support and made me feel so welcome. I am so [grateful] for everything that was done for me” – Help Centre visitor ❤️

Recently, we received an update from Ammanford Food Bank who were recipients of a multi-year Cost of Living grant of £15,000 to help fund a community food bank and support centre 🍲

The help centre has been open on Mondays and Fridays and over the funding period, has supported over 1000 people in accessing food, as well as making referrals and helping them to fill out forms that will allow people to maximise their income. In total, they’ve helped make £840,000 in financial gains for people in the community! 🫶

They offer support to anyone without judgement and with kindness, and are always continuing to evolve, with staff members greeting people on arrival and grabbing them a hot drink ☕

To some, these may seem like small things, but to a person in need, the little things can make all the difference.

It’s very clear that the help centre and foodbank have become a pillar in the community for so many people, with visitors to the centre calling staff “brilliant”, “thoughtful” and “understanding” 💬

We can’t thank the group enough for all that they’ve done in their community and for the difference they are making to so many people’s lives – diolch! 🌈

“Cefnogaeth wych ac mor groesawgar. Rwyf yn hynod o ddiolchgar am bopeth a wnaed.” – Ymwelydd i'r Ganolfan Gymorth ❤️

Yn ddiweddar, cawsom ddiweddariad gan Fanc Bwyd Rhydaman, a dderbyniodd grant Costau Byw aml-flwyddyn gwerth £15,000 i helpu i ariannu banc bwyd cymunedol a chanolfan gymorth 🍲

Mae’r ganolfan gymorth wedi bod ar agor ar ddydd Llun a dydd Gwener, dros gyfnod y grant, ac mae wedi cefnogi dros 1,000 o bobl i gael mynediad at fwyd, yn ogystal â gwneud atgyfeiriadau a helpu pobl i wneud y mwyaf o’u hincwm. Fel cyfanswm, maent wedi helpu sicrhau cynilion ariannol gwerth £840,000 i bobl yn y gymuned! 🫶

Maent yn cynnig cefnogaeth i bawb heb farnu a gyda charedigrwydd, ac maent bob amser yn parhau i ddatblygu. Bellach, mae ganddynt aelodau o staff sy’n cyfarch pobl wrth iddynt gyrraedd ac yn cynnig diod boeth iddynt ☕

I rai, gall hyn ymddangos fel rhywbeth bach, ond i rywun mewn angen, gall y pethau bach yma wneud byd o wahaniaeth.

Mae’n amlwg bod y ganolfan gymorth a’r banc bwyd wedi dod yn rhan hanfodol o’r gymuned i gymaint o bobl, gyda ymwelwyr yn eu galw’n “wych”, “ystyriol” ac “amyneddgar” 💬

Ni allwn ddiolch digon i’r grŵp am bopeth y maent wedi’i wneud yn eu cymuned ac am y gwahaniaeth y maent yn ei wneud i fywydau cymaint o bobl – diolch! 🌈

A few months ago we received a tag on a LinkedIn post from a grantee, Ben who was about to head on an expedition to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland for his dissertation! ❄️

Recently, Ben sent us an update, with pictures of the expedition and his gratitude to our North East Wales Science Fund for allowing him to pursue his passion and undertake a field project in relation to his dissertation 🫶

He received £1,000 for the trip, covering his flights to Greenland and back, proving the difference that small amounts of funding can make for individuals 🫰

Ben is now looking at pursuing further research into glaciology following his trip and we wish him all the best for his future studies ✍️

This past week we celebrated World Day for Cultural Diversity! 🌍

We are proud to work with and champion some great organisations where diversity is at the core of what they do every single day 🫶

In particular, we wanted to give a shout out to And Breathe parent carer group in Bettws, Newport, who received funding from our Caryl and Henry’s Bettws Fund

And Breathe has used the funding to host a range of wellbeing and creative activities, such as journalling, crafting, knitting and so many more, for children (and their families!) with a diverse range of disabilities and needs 🎨

Activities for the children have helped them to socialise, build friendships and is connecting communities across Newport. Many of the parents who’ve benefitted from the group and its sessions at the community centre, now regularly volunteer there too, showing the wider ripple effect small amounts of funding can make 🤝

Thank you And Breathe for the changes you’re making to the lives of people across Newport and beyond ❤️

They offer a variety of workshops for people of all ages, such as accredited training courses for different sectors, employability and skills programmes, community engagement, environmental projects, educational programmes and home energy advice for people at risk of poverty 💡

Thanks to funding from Fund for Wales, Groundwork North Wales were able to host an afternoon of creativity at Alyn Waters, as well as bike rides out in nature, on inclusive all-ability bikes 🚲
