Yesterday, we spent time with RCN members at workplaces across Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board to discuss the shift harmonisation proposals.

At Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda Hospital, nursing staff reported not being able to take their breaks due to staffing levels not matching rising patient complexity and need.

Nicola Williams, Executive Director RCN Wales, said: "I was really pleased to meet a number of the extremely dedicated and committed nurses at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda and to have had an opportunity to discuss first-hand with them the impact that the proposed changes to their shift patterns will have on them when they are already working under such difficult circumstances."

RCN Wales, alongside other trade unions of the Welsh Partnership Forum, is calling for work on the SCPHN Health Visiting and School Nursing Programme to be paused.

We believe job descriptions must be developed through genuine social partnership and in line with Agenda for Change and NHS Job Evaluation principles.

RCN members employed in roles that require registration under Part 3 of the NMC register will be a Band 6 as prior to the NMC changes members would not have been required to hold a master’s qualification, however with the minimum academic level for SCPHN now being required to be at postgraduate masters’ level, it is impossible for factor 2 to be scored less than level 7.

Members should ask for:
• a copy of their job description
• a copy of the matched job report (MJR) if available.

Members need to review their job description checking that:
• the person spec states master's level qualification
• the job description accurately reflects their roles and responsibilities.
