Never a truer statement!
Tough Enough To Care
TODAY IS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY!
This World Mental Health Day the message is a simple one: "It’s good to talk. It’s even better to be heard."
Opening up isn't always easy and it can take a huge amount of courage for someone to finally say: "Actually, I'm not doing great."
When they do, what happens next matters. They don't necessarily need you to fix it and they might not need advice. They probably don't need to hear "look on the bright side" or "other people have it worse."
Sometimes, they just need someone to put down their phone, stop what they're doing and really listen, give them space to talk, let them finish, acknowledge that what they're going through sounds difficult and to ask, "What do you need from me?"
Being heard can help us feel understood, make things feel a little less lonely and make reaching out again feel a little easier.
So this World Mental Health Day the focus is to help all of us to become better listeners.
Check in with the mate who's gone quiet, make space for the colleague who doesn't seem themselves, or ask someone how they are and give them enough time to tell you the REAL answer.
If somebody chooses you as the person they open up to, remember you don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes one of the most powerful things you can say is:
“I'm here. I'm listening.”
If you're the person who needs someone to listen right now, please know that support is out there.
At Tough Enough To Care, our support groups offer a safe, welcoming space to talk, listen and be around people who understand that sometimes life gets tough.
