Peatlands in Wales provide important carbon storage; storing 30% of land-based carbon.

🪲 They provide crucial habitat for plants, animals, birds and insects, and help prevent flooding in the face of increasingly erratic weather.

❗Currently the 60 or so large scale industrial renewable developments proposed in Wales threaten around 36% of Welsh peatlands.

Yesterday, we joined local campaigners and activists in the Senedd to watch Niamh Salkeld - Plaid Cymru's debate on contaminated land.

The motion passed unanimously and we all felt encouraged by the powerful contributions from across the spectrum.

Huge thanks to Niamh for the debate, and to everyone who spoke in support of it including Elwyn Vaughan, Andrew Griffin, Ken Skates MS, Janet Finch-Saunders (thanks for mentioning our research!) Kierra Marshall, Nigel Williams, Vikki Howells MS, Sera Evans and Art Wright.

Fantastic to also have the support of Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability, Llyr Gruffydd.

The motion calls for the costs of remediation are borne by those responsible for polluting, for there to be dedicated funding to support the investigation and remediation of contaminated land, where costs cannot be recovered from those responsible. And it calls for a national framework for the testing and assessment of potentially contaminated land, prioritising sites that pose the greatest risks and to support local authorities to fulfil their statutory responsibilities.

Let's all work together to make sure this happens for the sake of communities and our wildlife.
