Arts Active Arts Active delivers an inclusive, innovative and exciting programme of creative activities and learning opportunities

The Arts Active Trust is an independent charitable trust supporting people to enjoy the arts through its programme of creative, participatory activities based in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. The Arts Active programme takes its inspiration from the diverse programme at the venue and capitalises on the expertise and resources they have, using them as a powerful catalyst for creative endeavours

. We aim to encourage people, from the youngest to oldest, to engage in and enjoy arts activity. The Trust believes passionately in the power of the high quality arts projects to engage, inspire and transform people’s lives no matter what their economic, cultural and social context may be. As a charitable organisation Arts Active Trust relies on support from the corporate sector, trusts and foundations and individuals in order to continue to develop its community engagement, working with schools, communities and disadvantaged groups throughout Wales. The Arts Active Trust works closely with and receives support from Cardiff Council to deliver the Arts Active programme.

Exciting news… Cardiff Dovetail is a Nation of Sanctuary Award finalist! 🎉
We've been shortlisted for an award in the category of Contribution to Arts.

We'll find out if we are a winner at the Nation of Sanctuary Awards dinner on 15 June 2026.

How very exciting and thank you to anyone who nominated us and the Welsh Refugee Council!

Music Lab is a creative space for 14–18-year-olds to experiment, collaborate, and push the boundaries of music-making. Whether you’re into beats, samples, synths, or live instruments, this is your chance to try new things, learn new skills, and explore the possibilities of music technology.

Each session gives you the chance to create original music using a wide range of tools — from traditional instruments and voice to found sounds, apps, synths, loops, and DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations).

You’ll get hands-on with recording, editing, mixing, and sound design, blurring the lines between genres and discovering your own unique sound. You’re also welcome to bring your own instrument or gear to plug into the mix.

Gamelan is a wonderfully versatile set of instruments allowing people of all ages and abilities to take part. The group welcomes new members to join this mixed ability group, regardless of previous experience.

Cardiff Gamelan is our community ensemble who meet regularly on Tuesday nights. Repertoire includes both traditional Javanese and western compositions for gamelan.

At Dovetail, our members have taken on a whole range of new instruments, and it’s been fantastic to watch them grow in confidence as they develop new skills. Our percussion section has even begun mastering the drum kit, glockenspiel and xylophone – bravo!

Another exciting development has been our brand-new tech! Thanks to some recent purchases (and a borrowed PA system), we’re now fully equipped with vocal and instrument mics, stands, and a new mixing desk. The difference in sound has been incredible, and the smiles at our first rehearsal with the new setup said it all – very happy Dovetailers indeed!

Join course tutor Will Frampton and guest artist Dan Johnson on Saturday 16 May for a drumming, percussion and deep listening session.

Guided by Drummer Dan Johnson we’ll be exploring deep listening, rhythm, and improvisation. Dan will demonstrate the inventive ways he uses drums and percussion – including by adding electronics – before introducing rhythms and structures to help us improvise new music as a group. Everyone will get a chance to play the drums as well as lots of percussion instruments.

This is a great session for anyone interested in developing their performance and rhythm skills as well as creative approaches to music. Don’t forget to bring ear plugs!
