Arts Active delivers an inclusive, innovative and exciting programme of creative activities and learning opportunities

The Arts Active Trust is an independent charitable trust supporting people to enjoy the arts through its programme of creative, participatory activities based in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. The Arts Active programme takes its inspiration from the diverse programme at the venue and capitalises on the expertise and resources they have, using them as a powerful catalyst for creative endeavours. We aim to encourage people, from the youngest to oldest, to engage in and enjoy arts activity. The Trust believes passionately in the power of the high quality arts projects to engage, inspire and transform people’s lives no matter what their economic, cultural and social context may be. As a charitable organisation Arts Active Trust relies on support from the corporate sector, trusts and foundations and individuals in order to continue to develop its community engagement, working with schools, communities and disadvantaged groups throughout Wales. The Arts Active Trust works closely with and receives support from Cardiff Council to deliver the Arts Active programme.

A group of children aged 10 – 13 came together for Arts Active’s first ever Junior Composers course. Junior Composers is a new branch of Young Composers; a course for 14 –18 year olds, which Arts Active has provided since 2014.

Students were introduced to gamelan instruments and learned to play a traditional Javanese gangsaran, before taking part in a group exercise to create music. This was followed by an exercise to come up with a title for a new composition to be worked on. The resulting title was Flamboyant, Red-Hot, Pink Lego!

The group was then split into three smaller groups, each tasked with creating either the start, middle, or end of the piece. Everyone then came back together to work on slotting the three sections together and workshopping them into a final piece. At the end of the day, the piece was performed to the children’s parents and recorded. Helen later edited the recording and it was sent out to the children to listen to.

Daeth grŵp o blant 10 – 13 oed at ei gilydd ar gyfer cwrs Cyfansoddwyr Iau cyntaf erioed Actifyddion Artistig. Mae Cyfansoddwyr Iau yn gangen newydd o Gyfansoddwyr Ifanc; cwrs i bobl 14 – 18 oed y mae Actifyddion Artistig wedi bod yn ei ddarparu ers 2014.

Cafodd y myfyrwyr eu cyflwyno i offerynnau gamelan ac fe wnaethant ddysgu sut i chwarae gangsaran traddodiadol o Java, cyn cymryd rhan mewn ymarfer grŵp i greu cerddoriaeth. Dilynwyd hyn gan ymarfer i feddwl am deitl ar gyfer cyfansoddiad newydd i weithio arno. Y teitl canlyniadol oedd Flamboyant, Red-Hot, Pink Lego!

Yna rhannwyd y grŵp yn dri grŵp llai, pob un â’r dasg o greu naill ai dechrau, canol neu ddiwedd y darn. Yna daeth pawb yn ôl at ei gilydd i weithio ar roi’r tair rhan at ei gilydd i greu’r gân derfynol. Ar ddiwedd y dydd, cafodd y darn ei berfformio i rieni’r plant a’i recordio. Yn ddiweddarach golygodd Helen y recordiad ac fe’i hanfonwyd at y plant i wrando arno.
