⚠️ CREOSOTE EXPOSURE AT NATIONAL GRID ELECTRIC DISTRIBUTION

GMB MEMBERS HAVE SPOKEN

199 GMB MEMBERS COMPLETED OUR CREOSOTE SURVEY

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and concerns.

The results reveal significant concerns about creosote exposure, workplace safety and current working practices.

📊 WHAT MEMBERS TOLD US

🔹 75% are exposed to creosote daily or weekly.

🔹 60% have 10 years' service or more, meaning many members have experienced long-term exposure.

🔹 8 in 10 members reported feeling pressure to continue working despite concerns about creosote exposure.

🔹 Only 36% feel confident refusing unsafe work involving creosote without fear of repercussions.

🔹 More than two-thirds reported reusing contaminated PPE or clothing because suitable alternatives were unavailable.

🔹 More than two-thirds stated that proper washing and changing facilities are rarely or never available following exposure.

🔹 Members identified exposure through working with:

* Creosote-treated poles

* Sleepers and timbers

* Legacy infrastructure

🛡️ YOUR SAFETY MATTERS

✅ Continue to raise and formally record any concerns regarding creosote exposure.

✅ Report issues relating to PPE, welfare facilities or creosote-treated materials to your line manager.

✅ You should not be expected to work with creosote unless it is safe to do so.

📢 GMB IS TAKING ACTION

The survey findings will be shared with National Grid Electricity Distribution.

GMB has requested a meeting with the company to discuss members' concerns and press for meaningful improvements to safety standards, welfare provision and working practices.

On Sunday's we do gate jobs.

Paul McGuire GMB & Marie Mc GMB used their Sunday to kick off our campaign at Radnor Hills in Knighton for GMB recognition on site. ✊

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped to chat with us and picked up one of our goodie bags. In the heat, the GMB water bottles and baseball caps definitely proved popular! 🖤🧡

Management may have asked us to move on, but they won’t stop this campaign.

This is only the beginning and we will continue to engage with our members and the workforce 💪

The initial meeting will be to provide feedback to EVRI on the ballot outcome and pay offer more broadly.

CAC Recognition Ballot @ Bidfood update Posted on: 23 June 2026

Dear Bidfood Colleagues,

As most of you will be aware by now, last Tuesday we were advised by the CAC that the ballot for recognition of GMB and Unite had been won. 41.2% of Bidfood Transport Employees voted in favour of having a trade union to represent them in their respective depots.

This is an historical moment for Bidfood Workers and every one of you played a part in making that ballot successful.

Yesterday I spoke with Bidfood HR, they are contacting the CAC, and we will soon be negotiating the terms of the Recognition Agreement for Transport Workers.

GMB & Unite yesterday submitted a SchA1 letter to Bidfood HR for recognition for the Warehouse Workers. Bidfood have 10 working days to respond to this letter and advise us if they wish to agree this voluntarily, if not, then we will pursue this through the CAC Route and to a ballot of Warehouse employees.

We will keep you updated on progress in the coming weeks.

🌡️ Hot weather isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s a workplace safety issue.

As temperatures rise, so do the risks ⚠️ Dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, fatigue and heat stroke can all lead to serious illness or accidents — indoors and outdoors.

Employers have a legal duty to protect staff by providing:

✅ Regular breaks
💧 Access to cold drinking water
🦺 Suitable clothing and PPE
🌳 Shade for outdoor workers
🌬️ Good ventilation and cooling indoors

Know the warning signs 🚨 Dizziness, headaches, cramps, nausea, confusion and extreme tiredness.

If the heat is affecting your safety at work, speak up ✊ Contact your manager, GMB rep or safety representative.

Everyone deserves a safe and healthy workplace — whatever the weather 💪

Dear Bidfood Transport Members,

I wanted to let you know as soon as practically possible, the results of the trade union recognition ballot for Bidfood Transport members (3663).

I'm happy to confirm that yesterday evening we received the official CAC ballot results that we were successful.

the ballot result was:

Q) Do you want GMB Union & Unite the Union to be recognised for the purposes of collective bargaining on your behalf?

Yes - 95.04%

No - 4.96%

Thank you to everyone who took part and engaged in the process. We recognise it has been a long and frustrating process.

There will be further communications and next steps to follow from our National office including recognition for our warehouse members.
