📢 Let’s make early years reading a long-term national priority for Wales…

For many children, the first book they own comes through a BookTrust Cymru programme.

Our evidence-based, bi-lingual programmes provide vital support to help more children experience the life-changing benefits of reading, supporting families to share stories, build confidence, develop early language and literacy, and create meaningful moments together from the earliest months of life.

📚At a time when concerns about literacy standards are growing across Wales, investing in early years shared reading has never been more important.

We’re calling on the Welsh Government to guarantee long-term investment in BookTrust Cymru’s reading programmes, so every child in Wales can benefit from books, stories and reading from the very beginning.

I lawer o blant, daw’r llyfr cyntaf sy’n eiddo iddynt drwy raglen BookTrust Cymru.

Mae ein rhaglenni dwyieithog, sy’n seiliedig ar dystiolaeth, yn darparu cymorth hanfodol i helpu mwy o blant i brofi manteision darllen sy’n newid bywydau; maent yn cefnogi teuluoedd i rannu straeon, meithrin hyder, datblygu sgiliau iaith a llythrennedd cynnar, a chreu eiliadau ystyrlon gyda’i gilydd o’r misoedd cyntaf o fywyd.

📚Ar adeg pan fo pryderon ynghylch safonau llythrennedd yn cynyddu ledled Cymru, nid yw buddsoddi mewn darllen ar y cyd yn y blynyddoedd cynnar erioed wedi bod yn bwysicach.

Rydym yn galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i warantu buddsoddiad hirdymor yn rhaglenni darllen BookTrust Cymru, fel y gall pob plentyn yng Nghymru elwa ar lyfrau, straeon a darllen o’r cychwyn cyntaf.

With September in full swing, our Writer in Residence Lucy Rowland thinks it's the perfect time to explore how sharing stories can help to boost children's word learning!

Here are four of Lucy's great tips:

- Bring new words to life 🧸
Try using story sacks, showing props, or adding actions.

- Try pausing and prompting children to join in 💬
That way they can have a go at using new words themselves. Books with repetitive refrains are great for this!

- Think beyond the book... 📚
If a particular category of words comes up in a story, you could ask children to name another word in that group.

- Support children to be curious about new words 🔍
Can they be a ​‘word detective’ and look out for words they haven’t heard before?

It's publication day! 🎉

We’re sending a huge thank you to Dref Wen for working with us to give families in Denbighshire, through the Denbighshire Bookstart Team, copies of the Gruffalo books in Welsh including the new Mam-gu Gryffalo.
This ties in with the amazing Macmillan Children's Books teaming up with BookTrust to send 40,000 Gruffalo books, including the brand new Gruffalo Granny, to families through libraries across England and NI in this National Year of Reading.
We hope this generous donation from Macmillan Children's Books and Dref Wen will create many joyful story moments for children and families across the country 💚
