🐿️🐿️Name Hailey Park Squirrel competition🐿️🐿️
The results of the vote are in!:

1st place (34%): Cyril the Squirrel, nominated by Megan (age 4) and Sam Allen.
2nd Place (30%): Bob Nut (Oliver age 7)
3rd place (7.8%) : Rizzle the Squizzle aka Rizz (Arthur Keogh)

Megan placed Cyril's name tag on him, (we've had two requests to arrange a permanent nameplate on the the bench, which we'll look into).

Megan won a cuddly fox, and Sam Allen a book voucher (Sam/parents - please get in touch so we can arrange to give it to you).

Thank you to everyone who came at short notice; and to local resident and park user, Alan Bretos whose idea it was to find a name for our park's new inhabitant!

Centenary Wassail Gwasael Canmlwyddiant

A chance to gather and make merry to celebrate 100 years of Hailey Park like people did back in the day! Sharing a song or two and strolling to wake up our Community Orchard to "blossom and bear fruit". All welcome. Children need to come with an adult!

As you may recall, in 2025, Cardiff Council advertised an "expression of interest" for an operator of a catering concession on the Hailey Park Bowling Pavilion site.
The Friends of Hailey Park understand a potential operator was chosen chosen at that time but there has appeared to be little tangiable progress.
Because of this we wrote to the council asking for a progress report and whether public toilets would be included in this facility.
The council have responded saying they can't provide exact timescales but hope to make good progress over the next few months.
They have, however, confirmed that a public convenience will be provided - which appears to be good news!
We will, of course, continue to monitor the situation, request updates periodically and keep you informed.

🚧 MUGA update from Council Officers to Cllr's and FoHP from last week below:

Contractor has mobilised this week;
➡️setup up Welfare Unit,
➡️Added most signage,
➡️Erected Heras fencing,
➡️Set out the site.
➡️Arranged health and safety manuals, F10 form submitted to HSE.
➡️Traffic Management Plan prepared.
➡️Turf has been stripped under watching brief from the Ecologist. I’m waiting on the Ecologist report, but from the site inspection there were no waxcaps in the area. One was identified on the Perimeter of the site. The Ecologist identified most of the fruiting bodies are growing on the embankment away from the site. I will have a full report to present shortly.
➡️Contractor is offsite today as they are working around the weather (due to heavy rain). Topsoil stripping is on hold until dry conditions to avoid depleting the soil and generating additional mud on site.
➡️I will update you next after the progress Meeting on Monday 17th, including site photos. We anticipate the aggregate base will be partly installed by this date.

🚧 MUGA UPDATE

We have just heard, with one week to go, that Construction on the New MUGA begins on
3rd NOVEMBER for 12 weeks @ location B.

🤷‍♀️🤷We are extremely disappointed as we have been lobbying the council and our elected representatives for several weeks regarding its location, without success.

⛔️We believe that the new MUGA should not be built so close to the waxcaps (site B), but slightly further away (site C). Friends of Hailey Park informed the council of this as our preferred choice but our requests continue to be ignored. It is not too late!

⛔️Our concerns remain about the new MUGA's location and the impact it could have on drainage and the delicate ecosystem of the surrounding historical area that provides a habitat for the rare waxcap mushrooms: With some careful thought and planning, we can protect the waxcaps and have a new play facility.

⛔️For several weeks we have been asking the council for their ecology report and Management Plan that would prove the ecosystem will not be damaged, but nothing has been forthcoming. We asked our local councillors Dilwar Ali and Jennifer Burke (Cabinet Member for parks) for assistance in obtaining the necessary information and support, but nothing has materialised. We approached our member of the Senedd, Julie Morgan, who happens to be the Welsh Government's waxcap champion, who met with us, but the result was only to promise officers would communicate on our concerns, which they have not done.

⁉️We've asked about the following with no information provided :

⚠️No assurances on protection of Waxcaps in the location that the council has chosen.
No legally required ecology assessment report and no Protection Management Plan. These internationally important species are already being damaged in that area by Taff Trail works. The Council had other options for location of The MUGA but has chosen to further damage the chances of this essential legally protected species.
⚠️No advocacy from our counsellors who set up the bid without involving the Community.
⚠️There was a small consultation for a handful of children on some activities within an existing design decided by council officers and counsellors. The children were not consulted on location or protection of nature regarding this play facility.
⚠️the opportunity for children to learn about, protect and connect with endangered nature in location B when species are in steep decline in our country could be lost in the name of children's play when they could have both the endangered species and the play facilities if located at C.
🚧🚛The park already has 2 large infrastructure projects currently under construction: the chaos of ill-managed, potentially unsafe construction traffic through the streets from the recent start of Taff Trail works around Hailey Park could be set to repeat as we have no response to our requests to consult and inform us and the public about the transport plan for the MUGA construction. It seems no lessons are learned or proactive care taken. A simple transport plan agreed with the council prior to any works and information to the public could avoid this unsafe chaos.

While the Friends of Hailey Park welcome investment and improved facilities, it cannot be to the detriment of existing facilities, nature and wildlife habitats.

Sadly the New MUGA project has excluded any meaningful consultation with the Community at all stages from bid design through to construction with these evident detriments outlined.
📣We call on our elected representatives to act urgently, obtain the ecology reports and set up a meeting this week between FoHP and the relative Cardiff Council departments, to protect our park for future generations.

Dear members and park users,
As many of you will know, over 40 years ago the Taff Trail was introduced through Hailey Park - reportedly without any dialogue or consultation with park users. Whilst the Taff Trail is an enormous success for cycling ands walking for commuting and leisure, and brings visitors to the area, its success has resulted in increasing conflict between pedestrian and cycle users; a conflict that seems particularly problematic through Hailey Park, and increases risks to safety in what is ultimately a park given to the people of Llandaff North by Claude Hailey 99 years ago.

We were pleased when Cardiff Council announced that it would look into remedying the problem and promote safer shared use. However, their original draft plan included re-routing the Taff Trail up past the woodland, the children's playground and alongside Mary Street causing a safety risk and widening it to 5m with a significant net loss of green space.

As a result we've been lobbying for a change in the council’s plans, and we are pleased to announce that they have finally listened, with work due to commence in approximately 2 weeks.

In summary, the route will now remain almost entirely the same, widened where features allow, with appropriate signage promoting safe, shared use.

We still have some concerns about the impact on the area of rare waxcap mushrooms near the tennis courts, and have met Julie Morgan MS to inform her, and have raised our concerns with Cardiff Council.

We are proud to have once again been at the forefront of influencing the council and obtaining a better outcome for park users. Please consider joining us at only £3/annum to support our work http://www.friendsofhaileypark.org.uk/membership.html
