Minginish Community Hall

Minginish Community Hall Community Hall serving the Minginish area

The new Minginish Community Hall at Portnalong on Skye opened on 27 June 2009 after years of planning, fund raising and hard work by countless volunteers. We have regular groups who meet weekly and there are also one off events so there should be something going on for everyone!

On the 28th August at Minginish Community Hall!

Having grown up in the West Coast Coigach peninsula of the Scottish Highlands – an area steeped in culture and local traditions – Mairearad was introduced to folk music at an early age. Renowned for her deft and lyrical accordion style, as well as her dextrous piping, and haunting vocals, Mairea...

We are delighted to welcome Elizabeth Taggart to the Minginish Community Association team! 🌟
Elizabeth is joining us as our new Project Officer for the community housing project and we are incredibly lucky to have her on board. Elizabeth brings loads of experience to the role—she was the project officer with the Raasay Development Trust when they successfully built six community houses. She has also worked with the Communities Housing Trust, supporting other communities with their housing projects.
She will be steering our project through its next crucial stages, from overseeing the planning application, raising finance and ultimately, with a *lot* of hard work and a fair wind behind us, getting the homes built. 🏡🔨
You’ll probably see Elizabeth out and about in the community over the next few months - please give her a very warm welcome!

If you missed your chance to see the community housing plans at the hall at the end of November, we have put the plans up on the wall in Arnaval room for people to have a look at. If you are in the hall for any of the groups, please have a wee look. There are feedback forms too and we'd be really grateful if you could fill one in to let us know what you think. If you won't get a chance to have a look at the hall, and you are a Minginish resident - please contact me on [email protected] (Dawn) and I can email you the documents.

And our final joint winner of our Minginish Creative Competition is the brilliant "Message in a bottle". We love it! Thanks to Greg (Jock Scot) for sending it to us.

Message In The Bottle

Ah've been kickin conversations wae cattle
through the gaps in the timber
babblin oan aboot babblin brooks n
the way the pines sway like belly dancers when the gusts gather

Ah've been eavesdroppin oan carrions
squawkin squabbles aboot
how the hoodies are harbourin aw the council nests n
that the magpies are jostlin jewellery oan the sly again

Ah've been push pedallin against waves ay wind

wae hamster legs goan full tilt through treacle n toffee
as ah belt the baritone in defiance n
hit harmonies wae the howls

Ah've been standin sponge in tantalisin torrentials
soakin up the spirit ay it aw
seepin streams fae the river beds beneath mah skin as
ah’m moved by the motion ay the molecules

Ah've been message in the bottle fir many a moon now but
the tides huv turned in mah favour n
ah've drifted buoy blissfully n
washed up oan a western isle wae a note that reads

“ah um hame”

Over the Bridge Films is a Skye (and Minginish) based production company. This documentary focuses on music and community on the Isle of Skye and much of the filming was done in Minginish. There are interviews with Donnie Munro, Peter Morrison and Ruairidh Graham and live performances at Celtic Connections, Skye Live, and a session hosted by Noah Scott.

Have a wee look at the video below to learn more (and how you can help!), and to get a sneak preview of what you can expect to see in the film.

We can't wait to see the final film, which will be shown in Minginish Community Hall early in 2026 🥳
