Non-profit initiative Opening Up The Outdoors (OUTO) has issued an invitation to activists to apply to help lead an initiative that aims to make the outdoors more welcoming for people of colour (POC). The organisation has launched a recruitment drive for the 2026
cohort of UK OUTO Changemakers, open to those developing projects in the outdoor sector that focus on inclusion, access and social impact.

Previous Changemakers have done great things in this space 👏 and we're excited for the next cohort. Could it be you or someone you know?

Mountaineering Scotland's An Teallach path restoration project has been completed two months ahead of schedule!

And as it's , kudos to the 33 Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland volunteers who contributed over 412 hours of work to support Cairngorm Wilderness Contracts over three years 👏 💪 ⛰️

£300,000 community-backed project secures one of Scotland’s most fragile upland routes for future generations - as organisations call for urgent national investment in mountain path restoration.

Great to see these Ramblers Scotland Community Champions qualifying as Lowland Leaders 👏

If you're interested in becoming a Lowland Leader check out our website: https://www.mountain-training.org/qualifications/walking/lowland-leader/

Qualified leaders! 💫

Huge congratulations to our Community Champions - Jumana, Polly and Nataliia - who have just become fully qualified Lowland Leaders.

It's been an incredible journey for the three women; from initially meeting us for entry-level walks and skills sessions, to now being qualified with Mountain Training Scotland to safely and professionally lead summer group walks in low-level countryside and woods.🌳 🗺️

Through Ramblers Scotland’s Community Champions programme, led by our staff member Angela James, they’ve been doing fantastic work to support refugees, asylum seekers and people from global majority backgrounds to overcome barriers to walking.

Getting their Lowland Leader qualifications is an incredible achievement, and a milestone that reflects their dedication, leadership and passion for inclusive walking.

Their Lowland Leader assessor Stuart, from Outlook Adventures Scotland, says: "It's fantastic to see the 3 of them pass! I know they had put a lot of preparation into it. Now they can learn, lead and inspire others in the great outdoors."

We know that they can't wait to share their skills by leading walks with others, including groups from the The Welcoming Edinburgh and many more.

Well done, Jumana, Polly and Nataliia!!

We’re also excited to welcome six new participants to this year’s Community Champions scheme, so watch this space. 👍🏽

It's been a successful year for Winter Mountain Leader course delivery in Scotland this year with over 185 candidates attending training and assessment courses. They all faced challenging weather conditions, high winds and avalanche problems throughout the season.

"Mountain Training Scotland would like to congratulate our new Winter Mountain Leaders - including three MTS bursary-supported candidates - on their success. We extend our thanks to all candidates, providers, and their staff for their enthusiasm, adaptability, and resilience in helping make this season a success."

What happens next? The Schools (Residential Outdoor Education) (Scotland) Bill was passed after its final Stage 3 debate in December 2025 and became an Act of the Scottish Parliament on 11 February 2026. It means that all pupils in state and grant-aided schools in Scotland will have the chance to experience at least four nights and five days of residential outdoor education during their school career.

These are not mountains.

These are close-up images of melanoma and sun-damaged skin, shaped by years of UV exposure in the very environments they resemble.

Sun exposure remains one of the most normalised and least challenged risks in outdoor activity.

☀️ Only 16% of outdoor organisations have a dedicated sun protection policy

☀️ Over two-thirds report sun or heat-related incidents, including sunburn and heat exhaustion

☀️ At altitude UV levels increase by approximately 10–12% for every 1,000m gained, while snow can reflect up to 80% of UV radiation, intensifying exposure to the face and eyes.

With support from the Melanoma Fund Sunguarding courses are being seeded across the outdoor sector through partnerships with Mountain Training.

Stay sunsafe in the mountains. Remember regularly apply SPF factor 50+, cover up and take even more care when in high altitude and on snow.
