Callout 58: 2 May - Carneddau.
While walking alongside Llyn Cowlyd a lone hill walker slipped and fell onto their hand sustaining a painful injury. Direct communication and location of the casualty was not possible so two hill parties were deployed to either end of the lake. Local team members met with the walker who had self-extracted to the dam. The injury was assessed and splinted and the walker was assisted to hospital.

Callout 59: 2 May - Glyderau.

Callout 60: 3 May - Tryfan.
A solo scrambler walked in from Capel Curig to attempt "Nor-Nor Gully" route but without a route guide, quickly got off route and was unable to go up or down. Team members used his Sarloc Rescue /Phonefind location to get above him but were unable to access and traversed in from below instead. Once secured onto a handrail, he was assisted down to safe ground and back to the roadside.

Callout 61: 3 May - Cwm Idwal.
While having a family walk in Cwm Idwal, a 3 year old toddler toddled too much and fell over suffering a large head injury. Team members including a paramedic not deployed on the Tryfan call were quickly on scene and gave first aid. Thankfully the injury was not as serious as it looked and the family were able to walk out to Idwal Cottage where our mini casualty was treated to a tour of our 4 x 4 and blue lights.

Callout 62: 4 May - Glyderau.
3 walkers attempted to descend directly down the face of Glyder Fach and became stuck in steep ground. /Phonefind confirmed their location and a large hill party with rope rescue equipment deployed and climbed a gully up to them. Once fitted with helmets and harnesses, they were lowered back to safe ground and helped off the hill.

With the sun shining, the team took to the slopes of Tryfan to revise security on steep ground with some of the team's mountaineering instructors. We covered the differences between confidence roping and short roping, and when it's appropriate to employ each method. No fun was had whatsoever 😉

The team often works alongside if the helicopter is tasked to an incident then requires help to move the casualty from the hill to the aircraft, or if our casualty is so serious they require a higher level of care. To get a better understanding of how we can operate together, Drs Pete Williams and Dan Watson from the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) visited for a joint training session. They gave an overview of the equipment they carry and what they can do for critical patients on the hill. In turn, the team introduced our medical capabilities and equipment so they could see how we can help, especially in remote locations the aircraft may land in. We then had a joint exercise based around a local farmer who had crashed their quad bike and recieved critical injuries. The team did the initial treatment which prompted a request for EMRTS, the patient was then carried to the waiting doctors who put the patient to sleep to stabilise them and carry out further care.
It was great training session and we would like to thank Pete and Dan for giving up their time to train with us and improve our joint working with

Callout 51: 11 Apr - Carneddau.
After a return of winter conditions across Eryri, a group on the Carneddau found themselves unable to cope with the cold and wind and called for help. Team members located them, provided warm clothing, and helped them off the hill .
Checking the weather is an important part of planning a day in the hills and there are many sources of mountain weather information. This will help you to decide if the group has the right clothing and equipment, and is up to the challenge in the forecasted weather.

The first week of the Easter holidays have been busy for the team with 6 callouts.
Callout 40: 26 Mar - Glyderau.
Two walkers were unsure of the path whilst descending Twll Du/Devil's Kitchen so retraced their steps back up to Llyn y Cwn and called for assistance. Their location was confirmed with and a small hill party already at base deployed to locate the pair who were then assisted back down to Idwal Cottage.
Callout 41: 27 Mar - Glyderau.
2 people set out to camp on the summits but found the high winds too much so they changed their minds and descended. Unfortunately their headtorch ran out while navigating Twll Du/Devil's Kitchen and they lost the path and called for help. /Phonefind was used to confirm their location and a hill party found them and assisted them back down.
Callout 42: 28 Mar - Glyderau.
Concerns for other walkers in Twll Du, team leader dealt with the call with no deployment.
Callout 43: 29 Mar - Tryfan.
Two walkers were stuck in steep ground above the milestone buttress area of Tryfan. An initial hasty party were deployed to locate the pair and secure their location while further team members followed up with additional equipment. Safety lines were rigged to assist the pair onto safe ground before walking them back down to the roadside.
Callout 44: 30 Mar - Carneddau.
The team was called out at 2200hrs for a group who had become lost near the Afon Caseg above Bethesda. /phonefind confirmed their locationa and 2 local team members found them, gave them warm clothing and torches and help them down off the hill.
Callout 45: 31 Mar - Rhaeadr Fawr/ Aber Falls.
At 0100hrs 2 walkers called for help after getting lost above Rhaeadr Fawr. Team members located them, gave them warm clothing and torches and guided them down to safe ground.
Callout 46: 01 Apr - Tryfan.
3 walkers were ascending the east face when one decided he wanted to turn back and descend. Despite his friends request not too, he split from the group and shortly after became stuck on steep ground. 7 team members set up a technical rope rescue and raised him back to safe ground before helping him off the hill and back to base for rewarming.

All these callouts were avoidable with some simple planning; checking the weather, researching the route, carrying the right equipment, and allowing enough time for the trip.
