Earlier last month, UNISON's industrial action ballot on council and school pay in England and Cymru closed. Whilst branches across the country worked hard to encourage participation, the ballot did not achieve the legal turnout threshold required in enough key employers to enable coordinated industrial action that would have been likely to secure an improved pay offer.

As a result, UNISON's NJC Committee has reluctantly accepted the National Employers' final offer of a 3.3% pay increase, backdated to 1 April 2026. The GMB has also accepted the offer, bringing the national pay dispute to a close.

For Canterbury City Council employees, it is important to note that the Council announced in May that it would implement a 3.5% pay award, backdated to 1 April 2026. This means that staff have already received an increase that is higher than the nationally agreed NJC settlement of 3.3%.

As the final NJC settlement has been confirmed at 3.3%, no further adjustment is expected.

While many members will be disappointed that a higher national settlement was not secured, particularly given continuing pressures on household budgets, it is welcome that Canterbury City Council's pay award exceeds the final NJC agreement.
