Bemix We are people with and without learning difficulties and/or autism, working and learning together. bemix is also a social enterprise.

Whether it’s to be seen working, be heard campaigning, or belong to a friendly group of people, individuals achieve their goals with bemix. We are people with and without learning difficulties and/or autism in Kent, working together to achieve equality. As a Community Interest Company, all our profit is put back into supporting the work we do. We support people with learning difficulties to speak

up, make choices and become powerful and influential. We support them to gain opportunities and become more independent in learning, housing, work, health, money, travel, leisure and relationships. We support people to hear, respect and empower people with learning difficulties. We promote positive action to challenge negative attitudes about disability. We work with local communities so that people with learning difficulties become fully included and no longer segregated.

Supported Interns from the bemix Supported Internship Programme recently enjoyed a special visit to Maya’s Community Shop in Herne Bay, where they went to support and catch up with their Preparing for Employment (PfE) friends, Tommy and Lewis, who are currently volunteering there.

The visit gave the Supported Interns the chance to see first-hand the important work Tommy and Lewis are doing in their volunteer roles, helping out around the shop and supporting local people in the community.

The students enjoyed looking around the shop, learning more about how it helps others and seeing the positive impact their friends are making. There were also some exciting discoveries along the way, with Emmanuel especially pleased to find a glass chess set in the shop.

Visits like this are a wonderful way for students to learn from one another, celebrate each other’s progress, and see the many ways they can contribute to their communities through volunteering and work experience.

We’re so proud of Tommy and Lewis for the work they’re doing, and of all our students for supporting one another on their employment journeys.

Why Peer Advocacy Matters 💙

Steve Chapman recently presented to an international audience for Inclusion International, speaking about the importance of peer advocacy and lived experience leadership.

Following the closure of Cedar House in Kent, peer advocacy became critically important in helping people with learning disabilities and autism understand their choices, plan for meetings, and feel listened to and supported during a very stressful time.

“People with learning disabilities should not spend years living in hospitals when they could be living happy and independent lives in their communities.”

Peer advocacy is about making sure people are not just heard, but listened to and supported to make real choices about their own lives.

bemix supports people with learning difficulties, disabilities and autism to BE SEEN, BE HEARD AND BELONG.

Young people from our Supported Internship programme recently came together to celebrate National Supported Internship Day, recognising their achievements and sharing their experiences. 🧡

The event was a chance to reflect on the progress our interns have made from building workplace skills to growing in confidence and independence through their placements.

Across the UK, organisations also marked the day, helping to raise awareness of supported internships. Locally, Rochester Bridge and Rochester Cathedral were lit up in orange, shining a light on the importance of inclusive employment and the opportunities these programmes create.

We are incredibly proud of all our interns and everything they continue to achieve.
