Yesterday evening, we had to say goodbye to our very special Sir Klaus. 💔🦔
During his nightly checks, we found him outside his house, breathing very heavily and extremely weak. We brought him inside, warmed him, gave him fluids and, for a little while, he became more responsive. We dared to hope. ❤️
Sadly, that improvement didn't last. His breathing became laboured again and he deteriorated quickly. There was nothing more we could do, so I held him close and Klaus passed away peacefully in my arms, surrounded by love. 🌈
For those who didn't know Klaus, he was a senior wild hedgehog rescued last July after being attacked by another animal. He had lost an eye and suffered from chronic respiratory disease. We were told his prognosis was poor and that he may only have weeks left.
But Klaus had other ideas. 🥹
Those weeks became a whole year. He thrived in his safe retirement and became such a much-loved little character.
He especially loved his Sunday spa days — warm bubble baths and having his spikes gently cleaned with a toothbrush. 🛁🪥🦔❤️
We knew our time with him was limited, but we gave him the very best retirement we could.
Goodnight, Sir Klaus. Thank you for the extra year. You were so very loved and will be deeply missed.
Rest peacefully, little warrior. ❤️🦔🌈
