I know we have been very quiet for such a long time, but I felt comment was needed regarding the backlash from a local councillors post regarding the Pride event next week.
In 2020 we produced a short 20 minute film on the subject of growing up in the LGBTQ+ in a small rural community. We spoke to various people on how it felt for them, the support they received, the negative attitudes, their fears and prejudices received and their hopes for the future. They shared tips for parents on how best to understand their child’s sexuality. We spoke to a child who lived with two parents of the same gender, who told us that they would like more books available that represented their family and how they loved being part of this family. Many people we spoke to declined to be filmed or take part because it just wasn’t an issue for them because their situation was always positive.
To say it was an honour to listen to people’s stories first hand, is an understatement. They trusted us to tell their stories which really was a privilege.
It is such a shame that people are still being treated the same.
Next Saturdays parade is about acceptance, inclusivity, support and PRIDE above all else. There are not many of us who don’t know someone that is in this community, wouldn’t you just hate them to be treated with anything other than love and respect?
If you don’t support the event, that’s your opinion, but please just be kind and stay away. Maybe use that time to read up on the history of the Stonewall riots and have a think on how badly this community have been treated for hundreds of years.
