This week, we celebrate Learning Disability Week.
The theme is "Do You See Me?" which emphasises the importance of those living with learning disabilities being seen, heard, valued & respected in ALL aspects of life. A powerful reminder to look beyond a person's learning disability & see the whole person, their talents, dreams, achievements & abilities.
The aim is to raise awareness about the issues faced by individuals with learning disabilities & to celebrate their contributions to society. We see you! โพ๏ธ๐๐
So what is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a reduced intellectual ability.
Many people with a learning disability find everyday activities challenging. Other people with a learning disability need to be fully supported in all areas of their life, including communicating, personal care & staying safe.
They are likely to take longer to learn, need support to develop new skills, need help to understand information & need support to learn how to interact with other people.
People with a learning disability may also have a learning difficulty (such as Dyslexia) or they may be neurodivergent (such as having ADHD or being Autistic).
Autism is not a learning disability, but learning disabilities are more common and co-occur in Autistic people.
In fact, 1 in 3 Autistic people have a learning disability.
With the right support & an inclusive community, people with a learning disability can thrive.
โ
๏ธSpeak directly to the person & not only to their companion (if they have one).
โ
๏ธAsk about their needs. Learn what helps them & make changes in how you communicate.
โ
๏ธRespect all types of communication. (pictures, sign, words, gesture, devices)
โ
๏ธBe patient. Give time for the person to tell you their message.
โ
๏ธBe inclusive & offer support when needed.
Letโs build a world where differences are embraced & everyone has the chance to shine! Together, we can create a community where everyone is seen, heard & valued! ๐
