Its been a year since that tragic accident took the life of our friend Scottish John. The fatal incident involving a lorry took the life of 67-year-old John O’Brien on October 8 2025 John is remembered by all who knew him, a jovial man with a big personality, his good friends at The Haven in Newry sum it up perfectly in a wonderful heartwarming tribute

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has passed since we said goodbye to our dear friend John — a true member of The Haven family. 🤍

Today, we pause and reflect on the wonderful man we were so lucky to know. John’s spirit still feels very much a part of The Haven, and we can almost hear his cheerful “Hey doll!” or “Big un!” as he made his way through the room, tea towel over his shoulder, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.

Our Tea Towel Man, our Mr. Shaker, our perfect gentleman, always helping, always caring and always bringing a smile to those around him. John had such a gentle, thoughtful nature and a wonderful way of knowing when someone needed a kind word, a cup of tea or simply a little company.

He never missed a Wednesday at The Haven, and his presence brought so much warmth to our days. A year may have passed, but the memories remain — the laughter, the stories, the familiar sayings and all those little moments that made John, John.

We miss him more than words can say, but today we choose to remember him with love, gratitude and a smile. We feel incredibly lucky to have shared so many special moments with him.

John will always be part of The Haven family, and he will never be forgotten.

Always in our hearts. Always remembered.

Camlough Men's Shed offers deepest condolences to Ciarans Family on his sudden passing. He was a very familiar face at Camlough Lake. We will miss the wee chats with him. May he rest in eternal peace.

We’re delighted to help spread the word about a fantastic Fundraising Event being organised by our friends at The Brain Injury Foundation, an organisation we work closely with in supporting people and families affected by brain injury.

Taking place on Thursday 29th October at 7.30pm, the evening promises plenty of comedy, music and stories, while raising much-needed funds to support the important work of the Brain Injury Foundation.

🎟️ Tickets are just £10 per person, with a raffle on the night.

This is the volunteer position that I personally really enjoy, please reach out to Pat or Conor thier information is in the poster. Croabh rua hurling club is located on High Street Bessbrook ( directly behind Bessbrook Mill) and its one of a few hubs in need of Volunteers one or more mornings per week, if you can arrive at 10.30am and give one hr or more please reach out. I know that we may be the only voice, the only connection to the outside world that one elderly person might have on that day, the craic is so good with them at times that I find myself laughing out loud, they enjoy reminiscing , or sharing thier days plans, they might want to off load a complaint or just ask how your doing, its a very rewarding volunteer position, so please give it some serious consideration. Some man for one man!
Omeath man Ciaran Phillips has been quietly doing something pretty extraordinary.
Since 2019, Ciaran has travelled to Ghana, paying his own way, to drill wells and help bring clean water to villages in the Volta region. What began with a well drilled in memory of his beloved cousin Melissa O’Reilly, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2018, has grown into something remarkable — around a dozen wells have now been drilled.
And Ciaran is going back again. ❤️
On 23rd November, he’ll be joined by the Mo Chara boys from Dundalk — Vincent Mulligan, Cillian Mulligan and Paul Kelly — for another self-funded trip to Ghana.
Their ambition is to raise enough money to drill five or six more wells, with each one costing around €6,500.
Think about that for a moment.
Something we take completely for granted every day — turning on a tap and getting clean water — can transform an entire village.
These lads aren't just raising money and sending it away. They're getting on the plane, paying their own expenses and going out there to help do the work.
👏 Now THAT deserves support.
So come on, Ireland — a few €€ or ££ from enough of us could help put clean water into another village.
