Mental Health Week reminds us that sometimes the most important thing we can offer another person is our time β€” and our willingness to listen.

Recently, 95-year-old actor Clint Eastwood spoke openly about ageing, loneliness, and the quiet sadness that can come as life changes over the years. He reflected on how, after a lifetime filled with people, stories, family gatherings, friendships, and memories, the world can slowly become quieter. Friends pass away, familiar faces disappear, and long stretches of silence can begin to replace the conversations that once filled everyday life.

What touched many people was not just his honesty about growing older, but the deeper truth behind it β€” that everyone wants to feel heard, remembered, and connected.

At Camlough Men’s Shed, a couple of members volunteer with the Morning Call service, making phone calls to isolated elderly people in our community. For many, that phone call may be the only contact they have with the outside world that day. It is more than a conversation β€” it is reassurance that somebody cares enough to check in, listen, and share a moment together.

Sometimes people do not need solutions or advice.Sometimes they simply need someone willing to hear their story.

A memory repeated for the tenth time.A story from years ago.A worry.A laugh.A silence shared over a cup of tea.

Those moments matter.

In a busy world, it is easy to underestimate the importance of reaching out. Yet a simple phone call, a knock at the door, or stopping by for a cuppa and a chat can lift loneliness in ways we may never fully realise. Human connection is a powerful part of protecting mental health β€” not only for the person receiving the kindness, but for the person giving it too.

This Mental Health Week is a reminder to look around us. We all know someone who could benefit from a visit, a conversation, or simply knowing they have not been forgotten.

Reach out.Listen patiently.Share time.Keep stories alive.

Because being heard can sometimes make all the difference in the world.

If you are interested in signing up for Morning Call service or know someone who would benefit from a call follow the info on the attachment. 😎 Stay busy folks it helps keep the Old Man and the old woman out.
