Our very own Casey O'Brien - former Youth Volunteer, now adult Volunteer Instructor and Wholetime Trainee Firefighter.

Celebrating stories like Casey's this .

This Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), we’re celebrating the incredible people helping save lives before emergencies happen.

Across the UK, volunteers in fire and rescue services are supporting prevention work, engaging communities and helping people stay safe from fire, road and water risks.

From mentoring young people to delivering safety messages and supporting local campaigns, their contribution is making communities safer everyday.

Casey O’Brien’s journey from youth volunteer to wholetime firefighter is just one powerful example of how volunteering can build confidence, unlock potential and inspire future talent.

Thank you to every volunteer making a difference across the fire and rescue sector.

Day 11 of - It's Christmas!

December has been all about Christmas spirit for our Youth Volunteers! They’ve supported Santa’s Grottos and Christmas parties at fire stations and in the community, taken part in the annual Santa Dash at the National Training Centre, and even become Santa’s little helpers with the local Rotary Club on the Santa Sleigh run.

And the magic didn’t stop there - they even got to meet a few real-life reindeer and of course Santa Claus himself along the way! We believe it’s important for our schemes to embrace the festive season and share joy with the communities they serve.

Day 10 of – Fundraising

Our Youth Volunteers have gone above and beyond this year to support incredible charities. From raising funds for The Firefighters’ Charity with creative challenges like YVS Dumbarton’s 80 laps of the drill yard for The Big Walk, to local fire station car washes and the festive Santa Dash at the National Training Centre, their efforts have been inspiring!

YVS Methil and Alloa also completed a sponsored hike in the Ochils in aid of 999 Re:set, while YVS Lanarkshire volunteered at a coffee morning at East Kilbride Fire Station to support Macmillan Cancer Support.

Every event shows their commitment to helping others and making a difference in the community.

Day 9 of 12daysofyvsmas – Wellbeing

Looking after our Youth Volunteers is just as important as the skills they learn. This year, schemes have taken part in a wide range of wellbeing activities designed to boost physical and mental health.

From fitness sessions and bleep tests to outdoor adventures, alcohol awareness workshops, and cold-water therapy, and even a weekend wellbeing retreat - every activity helps build resilience and confidence. YVS Lanarkshire even joined their local Reclaim the Night march, showing their commitment to creating safer communities.

When our cadets feel strong and supported, they’re ready to take on anything.

Day 8 of – Community Engagement

YVS promotes positive engagement with local communities – and as always, our Youth Volunteers have been out and about, volunteering and engaging with their local communities through a wide range of events.

From open days, Halloween celebrations, coffee mornings, and Santa’s grottos at local fire stations to supporting 10k runs and sharing their perspectives with youth councils and community taskforces, our Youth Volunteers are making a real difference.

Every event helps them build confidence, communication skills, and a sense of pride in serving others - because community is at the heart of everything we do.
