A cashless, app-first society is leaving too many people behind — and that doesn’t stop at the prison gate.

This article is a powerful reminder that when someone leaves prison, “starting again” often depends on being able to do the basics online: apply for jobs, access education, manage money, book appointments, and stay connected to family.

At Rebooted, we refurbish donated laptops and provide them to prison leavers and their families — helping people continue learning, rebuild confidence, and reconnect with the world outside.

A young person’s A-levels were at risk, not because they lacked motivation, but because strict restrictions meant they couldn’t use a normal internet-connected device.

Rebooted worked with the National Extension College and the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) to provide a specially configured device that met the required security conditions while still allowing safe access to education.

They were able to continue and complete their A-levels, and we supported their applications to university and other higher education routes—an opportunity that could easily have been out of reach.

And the impact doesn’t stop there: we’ve now built an ongoing partnership with the Metropolitan Police to keep a pool of secure devices ready to deploy quickly for other learners facing similar barriers.

In 2018, you could often sort things out in person.
In 2026, so much of life starts with a login: housing, work, healthcare, learning — even staying connected to family.
