Caring for others doesn’t mean you’re always OK yourself. 💛

To acknowledge World Mental Health Day we’re sharing an honest reflection from a healthcare professional about living with PTSD and the moments when they haven’t been OK.

Behind the professional role is a person. Someone who can need support, space to talk and care too.

If this resonates with you, you don’t owe anyone your story. But you deserve to be heard and supported.

Not every vital sign appears on a monitor.

A doctor and health care professional can continue working, caring and appearing capable while finding it difficult to cope underneath.

On National Physician Su***de Awareness Day, notice the person as well as their performance. Make time to check in, listen without judgement and ask again when something does not feel right.

Healthcare professionals care for us. They deserve care too.

A healthcare badge tells us somebody’s name, role and where they work.

It does not tell us how they are feeling or what they may be carrying.

Healthcare professionals can become very good at appearing capable while struggling underneath. Behind every badge is a human being who also needs care.

This World Su***de Prevention Day, remember the person behind the role. Listen without judgement, give them time and check in again.

Healthcare professionals can text YOD to 85258 for free, confidential, 24-hour support.

We’re super excited to be bringing The Huddle back, starting on Thursday 17th September, and it’s completely free to attend 💜

The Huddle is a small, confidential peer-support space where healthcare professionals can talk openly, share experiences and feel understood by people who understand the pressures of working in healthcare.

Our returning Huddles will be facilitated by Dr Tiina Tamm, a consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia with more than 20 years’ experience. Alongside her clinical career, Tiina is a trained psychotherapeutic counsellor, bringing together her understanding of the realities of healthcare with the skills to support thoughtful, open and human conversations.

Sometimes, it starts with a simple question: ‘Are you okay?’

Checking in on a colleague, noticing when someone doesn’t seem quite themselves, or making space for an honest conversation might feel like a small thing but it can make an enormous difference.

We don’t always know what someone is carrying behind the scenes. Taking the time to reach out, listen and remind someone that they don’t have to face things alone matters.

One conversation can save a career. One act of kindness can save a life.

Keep checking in. Keep reaching out.
