Strenghtening inclusion at Royal Papworth 💪

The conclusion of Cohort 1 of Royal Papworth Hospital;s Leading for Inclusion Programme marks an important milestone in strengthening inclusive leadership across the hospital.

As the hospital's charity, we are proud to have provided funding for this programme in partnership with NHS Charities Together

This support has enabled the hospital's mid‑level managers to enhance their confidence in leading diverse teams, deepen their understanding of different backgrounds and experiences, and develop practical approaches to creating supportive, thriving, and high‑performing team environments.

At a recent event to celebrate the conclusion of Cohort 1, a range of inclusion projects were shared with attendees. Marcus Riddell, the new Chief People Officer at Royal Papworth, highlighted work on family liaison, reducing pain disparities in post-operative patients, and support for international staff - practical initiatives with real potential for the hospital to take forward.

Eilish Midlane, Chief Executive of Royal Papworth and Krystyna Grant, Managing Director of Royal Papworth Charity thanked the cohort for their commitment and engagement throughout the programme.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in the first round of the programme, including Onika Patrick-Redhead, Senior Responsible Officer/Assistant Director of Organisational Development at Royal Papworth and programme facilitators Morvia Gooden and Christine Wint, whose expertise and guidance were instrumental to the programme’s success. 🙏

Congratulations to Krishna Kris, owner of Kathmandu Lounge - Peterborough on winning the Peterborough Community Business Awards for Best Hospitality. 🍾

As a double lung transplant patient, Kris continues to mark his transplant anniversaries by hosting successful fundraising evenings at his Nepalese restaurant - a meaningful way to honour the second chance at life made possible by the generosity of his donor family. 🫁

Our charity is hugely grateful for the £20,000, Kris and his customers have raised for our charity, that supports the vital work of Royal Papworth Hospital

From 200 metres to 850 kilometres: Christos’ incredible journey 🫁🚵

Double lung transplant recipient Christos is preparing to take on one of Europe’s most iconic cycling challenges - the Route des Grandes Alpes. Starting in Geneva on 27th June and finishing in Nice 16 days later, he’ll cover an incredible 750–850 km alongside his partner, Rachel.

His aim is to raise awareness of life after transplant and vital funds for Royal Papworth Hospital

But this journey is about so much more than cycling.

Christos was born with cystic fibrosis – a genetic condition that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, leading to severe breathing difficulties, repeated infections and progressive lung damage. By the age of just 22, he needed a double lung transplant. Before his transplant at the age of 23, even the simplest tasks were a struggle – he couldn’t walk his dog more than 200 metres without needing to stop and rest.

As a child, he always had a bike, but he was never well enough to truly ride them. Today, his life tells a very different story. He now enjoys running, cycling, climbing and mountaineering, and has even won gold medals in tennis at the World and British Transplant Games.🥇

This life-changing transformation has been possible thanks to the expertise of Royal Papworth Hospital and the generosity of his donor and their family, whose selfless decision gave him a second chance at life.

Christos says: "I am taking on this challenge because I am lucky to be well and strong enough to do so, and I'm aware many others aren't so fortunate; I feel an obligation to make the most of the second chance I have been given thanks to my donor, and to find out what I am capable of and where my limits are"

Now, Christos is pushing himself further than ever before. Despite months of training – including cycling across the Canary Islands – he admits he’s still unsure whether his body can physically complete the ride. But he’s taking on the challenge anyway, driven by gratitude, resilience and a determination to give back.

Please support him: Donate to help fund life-saving care and groundbreaking research at Royal Papworth.

Kiko tri-ing for Royal Papworth 🏃

A huge thank you and good luck to Kiko, Lead Nurse in Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Papworth Hospital, who is taking on the Royal Windsor Triathlon this Sunday (14th)

This is Kiko's first triathlon, where he will be swimming 758m, cycling 22km and running 5km, to push his limits and raise money for the hospital.

Kiko is looking forward to the challenge and says: “Every day, I witness the dedication of the staff teams I work with and the difference they and the charity makes to the lives of patients and families.

“The triathlon is going to be tough, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by the people we care for.”

Thank you to Kiko for his continued support for our charity and everyone who has donated on his fundraising page.

There’s still time to show your support for Kiko.

Celebrating inclusion 🏳️‍🌈

As part of Pride month, Royal Papworth Hospital LGBT+ staff network hosted a vibrant stall in the atrium.

They welcomed hospital staff, patients, and visitors to drop by for a chat and resources.

Our charity is able to support all the hospital’s five staff networks activities, including events like this that promote inclusion, visibility, and a stronger sense of belonging across Royal Papworth.
