We had a very entertaining and informative evening learning about Egyptian belly dancing through costumes and props. Sue Baker was such an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. We even had to go ourselves and found it to be a wonderfully liberating experience!

Anyone interested in joining our WI? This is a good time to get in touch as our membership runs from the start of April 2026. We have planned a great programme for the year ahead, including belly dancing, singing, climate/habitat change talk, CPR training, indoor bowling, the natural history of Cambridge to name a few. We are a diverse group of wonderful women (the photo is from our Christmas craft and social) and besides our monthly meetings, we have a thriving book club and a craft club. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in St Barnabas church hall on Mill Road. Get in touch!

We enjoyed our Annual Meeting last week, looking back on the year we’d had and anticipating what’s to come. We also enjoyed a quiz all about the WI. Very few of us realised that WI resolutions had launched high profile campaigns such as Keep Britain Tidy!

Our Wednesday was nurturing - Rachel W led a beautifully grounding session on the power of rest.
Rachel talked us through the necessity of rest for energy and productivity as well as highlighting its different forms and advice on how to make those opportunities during the day. We then eased into a 20‑minute guided meditation, where Rachel helped us settle busy minds and gently soothe the nervous system. Thank you to Rachel for sharing her time, wisdom and calm presence. The Belles then entered into a fantastic raffle where everyone was a winner ❤️ The best kind of raffle!

Tarot Cards
This week’s meeting was pure wonder led by our very own Belle, Lucy—she took us on a fascinating exploration into the rich history and symbolism of the tarot cards. From humble beginnings as a 22-card deck of trumps (the Major Arcana) to the full 78-card pack we know today, tarot has evolved into a powerful tool for reflection and creativity.
🃏 The core of the cards is the Fool and the Fool’s Journey mirrors our own path through life—growth, challenge, and change.
Lucy shared the beauty of finding a deck that speaks to you and how your tarot deck becomes a companion that listens, remembers, and witnesses your story. More than fortune-telling, tarot can be a practice in mindfulness. One card can unlock deep insight and spark imagination.
Highlights from our session:
- From Playing Cards to Spiritual Symbols: Tarot weaves astrology, planets, and the zodiac into every reading.
- The Marseille Deck: A favourite for its simplicity and depth—easy to learn, hard to master.
- Lucy described her preference for the 3-card spread when reading the cards, reflecting the past, present, future—or mind, body, spirit.
- We learnt that Tarot isn’t just a deck—it’s a mirror, a muse, and a map. You can be drawn in by its philosophy, its artistry, or its wisdom and it offers a space to reflect and imagine.

The Belles learnt all about hats from Susan the owner of Mill House Millinery in Saffron Walden.
She talked us through the process of designing and making hats.
As well as flattering bespoke designs (she can make a hat to suit anyone) Susan also makes hats that are truly works of art, including a beautiful silk hat inspired by the architecture of Barcelona and an intriguing Brussels sprout hat for a display in Colchester. And she produces a ready-to-wear collection. An added bonus is that she sources as many of her materials as possible locally - silks from Sudbury, millinery wire from Essex and felt from Luton.
We had fun trying on her hats and listening to Susan who, as well as being a talented milliner, is very amusing.
