Abbey in Cambridge Coming together to make Abbey a better community in Cambridge

Abbey People aims to develop community cohesion and support the most at-risk in this deprived area through targeted community projects, provision of general support such as a community fridge, supporting access to education and employment and developing a culture of volunteering in the community. Its work focuses on the most deprived area of Cambridge, an area which according to the multi-deprivation indices has become more deprived between 2015 and 2019. Abbey People was established in its current form in 2013, having transferred the work of Abbey Action from Cambridge City Council, with some of its workers having 20+ years’ experience in the area.

Abbey Seedlings Gardening Club 🌱

Join us for some gardening fun for parents and toddlers!

3rd Tuesday of the month starting, the next one is Tuesday 20th October
9:30 – 11:30am at East Barnwell Community Centre during term times.

Expect planting, mud kitchen, and garden themed activities. The sessions will be messy, please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Frazzled Fridays: A little support when you need it

Parenting and family life can be challenging, and sometimes it helps to have someone to talk to.

Frazzled Fridays, run by Abbey People and Cambridge Acorn Project, offers an informal, safe and welcoming space for local families experiencing difficulties with mental health and wellbeing.

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, worried about your child or simply need a friendly chat, you’re welcome to come along. You don’t have to face things alone.

🕣 Every Friday during term time, 8.30am–1pm
💬 Bookable one-to-one sessions are also available on the first Friday of each month.

📣 You’re invited to our Annual General Meeting!

Join us on Monday 2nd November as we look back on the past year at Abbey People, share some of the highlights and celebrate the difference made across our community.

🕡 18:15 for an 18:30 start
📍 East Barnwell Community Centre
⏰ Finishing by 20:30

As well as the formal business of the AGM, we’ll be sharing our highlights from the year, hearing from people about their experiences through impact interviews, and looking at the difference your support has made.

There will also be an opportunity to enjoy some food and catch up with others after the formal presentation.

The evening will include:

• Annual accounts and reports
• Appointment of trustees
• Highlights from the past year
• Impact interviews
• Food and networking

🌱 Climate Café: Can gardens help save the planet?

📅 Saturday 14 November, 2pm–4pm
📍 East Barnwell Community Centre

This summer’s heatwaves and drought have been a reminder of how our climate is changing. But our gardens and green spaces can also play a part in helping us adapt and support nature.

At our next Abbey Climate Café, we’ll be joined by local East Anglia group Climate Change Gardening to explore how we can create and maintain greener, more resilient and wildlife-friendly spaces, from window boxes and gardens to allotments and community spaces.

The Abbey Climate Café is a welcoming space to learn, share ideas and chat with people in your community about climate change and our local environment.

Come along for a hot drink and refreshments, hear from Climate Change Gardening, and share your own experiences and ideas. Everyone is welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join us for chalk stream restoration volunteering sessions on the 2nd Tuesday of the month!

Meet us by the Abbey Pool Splash Pad and help continue conservation works to protect your local chalk stream.

All equipment will be provided. What do you need to bring?

The Abbey Swish is back this autumn! Whether you’re looking for a cosy jumper, comfy trousers, or a costume for Halloween, this is set to be another great event 👕🎃👞👚🦇👢🕸️👗

Bring up to 10 clothing items in good clean condition for swapping 👟

This event is for everyone - we are accepting women’s, men’s and children’s clothes, fancy dress costumes, shoes and accessories. Please do not bring underwear, dirty clothes or clothes in bad condition.

6pm drop off your clothes for sorting
6:45pm swapping starts

While you wait for the clothes to be sorted…

🥂 enjoy a drink and cake from the bar

😊 and get to know your neighbours!

We are also looking for volunteers to help with:

Why do people volunteer with Growing Abbey? 🌱

For some people, it’s about getting outside.

For others, it’s learning something new, meeting people or simply doing something practical that makes a difference to the place they live.

We asked Sam, one of our greenspaces volunteers, about her experience volunteering with us:

"I worked every day for 30 years, yet volunteering for 2 hours a week has majorly contributed to my sense of purpose."
