It's International Donor Conception Awareness Day 2026!

For Donor Conceived UK the day is about raising awareness about Donor Conceived People’s experiences across their lifespan, including the topic of access to genetic information, (including health information) and lifting shame and secrecy around the topic.

This year we’re spotlighting the impact of DNA testing.

The ConnecteDNA project explored how online DNA testing is being used by Donor Conceived People, donors, parents,
and their families and the contents are rich in insight.

We’re excited to now share this incredible resource created as a legacy to the project with you!

🧬🧬🧬It’s DNA Day! 🧬🧬🧬

National DNA Day is celebrated annually in the UK and globally on April 25th to commemorate the 1953 discovery of DNA’s double helix structure by Watson, Crick, Wilkins, and Franklin, and the 2003 completion of the Human Genome Project. It highlights advances in genomic research, medicine, and ancestry.

🧬The Donor Conceived UK team are all set up at The Surrogacy UK Conference to spread our message.

🧬They will be speaking on the topic of…

📣What Happens When We Grow Up: Lessons from the UK’s Donor Conception History

“Donor Conceived UK will present on the history of donor conception and the law around this in the UK, the impact of commercial DNA testing in relation to donor conception, and what these lessons mean for modern surrogacy arrangements involving donors and long-term wellbeing of donor conceived people.”

Wish them luck! 🍀

This is a powerful and important piece highlighting the kinds of fertility fraud and failures that are still happening today. It demonstrates the impact on donor-conceived people and their families in very real and lasting ways.

At Donor Conceived UK, we are particularly grateful for 12-year-old James’s honesty in sharing how upsetting it is to learn that your identity is not what you thought it was. His experience reflects something deeply familiar within the donor-conceived community. Many people recognise that moment of discovery as profoundly disorienting, raising questions about identity and belonging.

BBC: How did you feel when you saw your DNA results?

James: Upset, like because you can't just say someone is this and then they are not. Because that's like, bad. They said I'm Danish, but I'm not, and that's important.. It's not like saying 'oh this person eats a lot of chocolate cake....' But IDENTITY is the main thing, its who you are as a person.

What happens when the IVF s***m or egg donor you choose isn’t the one you get?

One of our community, Vanessa, recently wrote an article for PET (the Progress Educational Trust) covering their latest event: “Understanding Egg Donation: The Give and Take.”

The event brought together clinical, social and lived perspectives on egg donation, and featured speakers including Nicky Hudson (who recently gave oral evidence at the current Parliamentary inquiry into egg donation/egg freezing) and another member of our community, Sophie. Donor Conceived UK also got a mention!

Vanessa is egg donor-conceived herself and felt the event captured many of the varied and complex implications of egg donation on DCP, donors and recipients alike. Read her article below:

The latest event from PET explorined the needs and interests of donors, recipients, and donor-conceived people alike.
