Even at the very end of a long, busy and exhausting season, the care never slips.

After months of intensive conservation work at Port Lockroy, carpenters Jo and Dan brought the same patience, precision and attention to detail to one of the season’s final jobs: replacing the Port Lockroy plaque on Bransfield House.

It may be a small detail, but every part of this historic site matters and every careful repair helps preserve its story for the future.

As the climate changes, so too do the risks facing Antarctica’s historic places, even 3,000 metres beneath the Weddell Sea.

The Guardian features UKAHT’s work to help protect Shackleton’s Endurance and the remarkable underwater world it has become part of, ensuring this extraordinary site is safeguarded for future generations.

Amid fears the wreck will be more accessible to explorers – and new species – as the climate warms, conservationists want to create the region’s first underwater protected area

For 70 years, Halley Research Station has been a beacon of polar science on the Antarctic ice, from its beginnings on the Brunt Ice Shelf to the 1985 discovery of the hole in the ozone layer.

Designed by UKAHT trustee Hugh Broughton Architects Halley VI continues a remarkable story of endurance, innovation and science that changed the world.

6,000 miles from home, on a shelf of ice that moves, cracks and occasionally breaks away, British scientists have been keeping watch for seventy years. What they've found has mattered to everyone.

We’re hiring: Freelance Metadata / Documentation Specialist

Help UKAHT shape the future of our digital heritage collections. We’re looking for a self-motivated specialist to enhance and prepare metadata for the rich digital data connected to the historic sites we care for in Antarctica.

Working with our XR Producer, Head of Buildings and Conservation and wider team, you’ll develop best practice recommendations, create collection-specific metadata templates, and apply these to selected 3D datasets and supporting 2D media.

This is a unique opportunity to support the long-term accessibility, management and public engagement of Antarctica’s heritage.

Help us preserve a unique place! The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust seeks a Freelance Metadata / Documentation Specialist to prepare and enhance metadata for a portion of our rich Antarctic digital data
