VOLUNTEERS' WEEK FINALE

We have had a great week celebrating all our volunteers do for the Squadron and Corps, last but by no means least, we have our OC, Flight Lieutenant Horstead!

"Volunteering, for me, is a way of giving back. I joined the ATC aged 13 and stayed a Cadet until I joined the Royal Air Force at 18 years old. During my time as a Cadet I flew Chipmunks, obtained an advanced gliding certificate and was a staff cadet at 613 Gliding School. I shot in both small bore and full bore rifles, representing the Region and the Corp in National competitions. I went on various camps, including Germany and Malta and was lucky enough to be selected to go to the USA on the International Air Cadet Exchange Scheme. To say the Air Cadets changed my life is an understatement, so I feel privileged to be in a position where I can help young adults to be the best version of themselves that they can be."

We hope you have enjoyed reading all about our wonderful volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering with us, sign up to our Adult Volunteer open evening where you can learn all about what we do and what you can achieve with us - give as much or as little time as you'd like!

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK - CIVILIAN COMMITTEE

Another volunteering force on the Squadron is the Civilian Committee, they manage the Squadron finances, support events and keep us running behind the scenes - here's why the Secretary, Richard Slack, is with us!

"I started as an Air Cadet at the age of 13 and worked through the ranks to Cadet Flight Sergeant, where I reached the upper age limit so had to hang up my uniform. I then continued my service as a Civilian Instructor at 104 (City of Cambridge) Squadron and later went back into uniform as an Officer. In 2013 I ended almost 30 years with the ATC as Commanding Officer of 104 Squadron as life events made continued service impossible.
My time with the Air Cadets taught me so much and gave me a level of self confidence that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Being part of a team with common goals and seeing generations of young people achieve their potential in a wide range of activities was incredibly rewarding and something I will remember with pride forever.

With my own sons growing up, it was logical to encourage them to try the Air Cadets for themselves and, when my eldest heard about the recruitment evening for 105 (Cambourne) Squadron last September he jumped at the chance to join. When the Squadron then called for people to join the Civilian Committee it felt like a real opportunity for me to support the Squadron in a practical way and, in April, I took on the role of Secretary. The Civilian Committee are responsible for the finances and governance of the Squadron - supporting their activities with funding and ensuring that the money is spent wisely.

Whilst I have only been involved with the Squadron for a short time I have been made very welcome by the Staff team and look forward to seeing the Cadet and Staff numbers grow and their achievements stack-up as the months and years pass."

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK

As we near the end of our Volunteers' Week spotlight, we are celebrating our Training Officer, CI Kressy!

"I joined the Air Cadets at 13 as a shy bot with a dream of flying. The ATC completely transformed me, building the self-confidence that allowed me to represent Great Britain Cadet Rifle Team in Canada, attend university, and serve as an RAF Officer for 25 years.

Now, I'm volunteering to put something back into the organisation that gave me everything. My aim is to help today’s young people realise their ambitions and make a positive contribution to society through the Air Training Corps. Plus, as an added bonus, the adult staff team is brilliant to work with! It's a really welcoming community, and it's been fantastic making new friends with such a great, like-minded bunch of people."

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK

We are carrying on our volunteer celebration through the weekend! The 5th instalment of what volunteering means to our staff is from CI Harvey:

"I volunteer at Air Cadets because I want to give back to an organisation that brings so much to young people. You don’t need a military background (I don’t), just a passion for enriching young people’s lives. In a world where it can be difficult to engage teens in activities, it’s important to provide opportunities that support a variety of interests. I’ve learned a lot about aircraft, first aid, space, radio, and more, and I hope to keep on learning. There are so many opportunities for volunteers as well as young people. I was pleasantly surprised by how seriously staff development is taken. It’s a great organisation to be a part of!"

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK

This evening we are shining the spotlight on CI Hollis, here's what she had to say about volunteering at 105!

"As a Cadet I was fortunate to gain skills and experiences which sparked my imagination and consistently pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was able to forge friendships with other young people on both local and national events. The support of adult staff volunteering their time to make events happen enabled me to gain the confidence to do all of this.

After a break for university and to establish my career I missed the comradery and varied training programme. I do not have a military background but being a Civilian Instructor enables me to volunteer when I can around work commitments.

I've been back as an adult volunteer for 6 years and in that time have been able to gain a variety of experiences and support delivery of activities including first aid, shooting, presentation skills, radio and fieldcraft amd social events. I enjoy the sense of pride when a cadet achieves something they didn't think they initially could. Seeing the young people support each other and work together to achieve is always fulfilling. I also enjoy the social aspect of volunteering with such a lovely team at Camboure Squadron."

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK

We've been showcasing the great work our volunteers are doing at the Squadron this week in celebration of Volunteers' Week! Next up is CI Fell!

"I was an Air Cadet (and a Scout) during my youth, and recognise the value that it gave to me in building my confidence and abilities. It allowed me do some really great activities I could have only ever dreamt of doing, to learn about teamwork with my peers and to push myself towards goals as I gradually developed and grew towards a professional career.

I've always been a strong advocate of youth organisations (and STEM); they play a major part in giving our young people the guidance to build their skills and knowledge in activities that they otherwise may not have the chance to do, regardless of their background.

I have been fortunate to have developed a long career in design engineering, in specialist government communications and the commercial satellite and space communications industry, along with a whole host of things I get involved in (generally involving STEM in one form or another: flying, astronomy, shooting, etc). It is great to be able to share knowledge built up over a lifetime.

Regardless of your skills and experiences, there is always something you can pass on to help young people progress towards their adult life and better contribute towards society. On top of this, the Air Training Corps provides opportunities for adult volunteers to learn and obtain qualifications within the organisation (which are also helpful in life, and fun!) - all within a fantastic team and network of supportive adult volunteers."

VOLUNTEERS' WEEK!

As part of Volunteer's Week, we have asked our staff why they volunteer within RAFAC. Next up, CI Pitalis!

"I volunteer because it makes me feel happy to know I am helping others. Volunteering at Air Cadets gives me the opportunity to help shape the future of young people – whether that be having a chat about a bad day at school, building plastic-bottle aqueducts or playing laser tag.

I feel privileged to be part of such a special team of people – everyone brings something different but the thing that unites us is working hard to make a difference. I spend a few hours a week volunteering, but what I get back in personal satisfaction far exceeds the time I give up.

I would encourage anyone interested in volunteering to give it a go - you will discover you have lots more to give than you think and if you are lucky, you will also land in a nice team and meet lovely, like-minded people."

If you're interested in volunteering with us, come to our adult volunteer open evening on Wednesday 24th June at 19:30 - register here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/WH0WpAQqfL

IT'S VOLUNTEERS' WEEK!

It's Volunteers' week from 1st to 7th June, when volunteers across the UK are celebrated for their dedication and contributions to the organisations they support.

As part of this, we asked our staff why they volunteer with the Squadron!

First up is CI Obeng Frimpong, who said:

"I became a Civilian Instructor (CI) because my son hopes to join the RAF in the future. Having grown up in an Army family, I was familiar with military life, but the RAF Air Cadets were a completely new experience for me.

Nearly a year on, I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding things I've done. I've loved working with the young people, discovering all the amazing opportunities available to them, and being part of such a supportive and dedicated team.

Every cadet night is different, and you always learn something new. Whether it's helping cadets develop confidence, supporting them to achieve their goals, or learning new skills yourself, there's always something to take away.

Seeing young people grow, challenge themselves, and succeed is incredibly rewarding, and I've met some fantastic people along the way.

If you've ever thought about volunteering with the RAF Air Cadets, I'd definitely recommend it!"
