Why does the Census matter to your young person?

Youth unemployment outside of full-time education is now at its highest level since 2014. Economic inactivity among young people is at its highest level since records began in 1992. At the same time, vacancies continue to fall.

Alongside this, the recent Milburn Review echoed what young people have been telling us for years through the Census: young people want to work, want opportunities and want fulfilling futures, but too many barriers still stand in the way.

That’s why the Census matters.

Every response helps build a clearer picture of what young people are experiencing right now, across education, employment, wellbeing and opportunity and helps shape the conversations, policies and support needed moving forward.

If you have a child or know a young person aged 11–30 in the UK, please share the survey with them before it closes on 8 June 2026 👉 https://ow.ly/7Swn50Z5Fo0

This week, we partnered with Pizza Pilgrims to deliver a fantastic work taster day for Year 12 and 13 students at their Cambridge restaurant. 🍕

Through this exclusive behind-the-scenes experience, students got a real insight into what it’s like to work in a thriving business, meeting the team, exploring different roles and building valuable employability skills.

Alongside this, students took part in a pizza-making workshop, creating their own pizzas before watching them come to life in the oven and, of course, enjoying the finished product.

Days like this help young people build confidence while developing key skills such as communication, teamwork, networking and problem-solving, all while experiencing the world of work.

A huge thank you to Pizza Pilgrims for facilitating the day and if you would like to find out more about work experience click the link below.

Monthly Round up April:

💬 In School Outreach Programme
This month, we’ve been busy in schools delivering a wide range of careers activities, including apprenticeship talks, careers fairs and enterprise days.

A major focus has been our 1-to-1 sessions, which give students dedicated time to explore their interests. We’ve delivered over 60 of these sessions, partnered with 12 different schools and met with students from Year 10 all the way to 13. These conversations play a crucial role in helping young people better understand the wide range of pathways available and feel more empowered about their next steps.

📡 Cambridge Wireless International Conference
We recently exhibited at the .wireless International Conference, a leading event that brought together a range of industry experts to explore the latest developments in technology and innovation.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity to connect with professionals across the sector, shape the work we do at Form the Future, and gain insight into how we can continue to support young people in exploring and navigating careers in the shifting tech landscape.

🧬  Illumina DNA day
We supported our partner  in delivering another DNA Day this month at their European headquarters in Cambridge.

Bringing together 97 Year 5 and 6 students from three local primary schools, the day immersed young learners in the world of STEM through hands-on DNA extraction experiments, lab tours, and a genomics session led by Cambridge Science Centre. Students also connected directly with Illumina employees, gaining first-hand insight into careers in science.

As Illumina’s flagship outreach event, DNA Day continues to spark curiosity and make cutting-edge science accessible, combining in-person experiences with ongoing virtual engagement and school partnerships.

There's only one week to go until your classroom could connect with the world of genomics. 🧬

We’re excited to continue our partnership with Illumina, Inc., a global leader in genomics and human health, to offer FREE Virtual Science Lessons for pupils in Years 5 and 6.

Next Monday, 27 April, this session brings the world of work into schools. Your pupils will meet real scientists from Illumina, explore DNA, and begin to see how what they learn in the classroom links to real opportunities beyond it.

It starts with a moment. A question. A discovery. A glimpse into what could be.

Secure your place and give your pupils that moment.

15/04/2026

As the first round of our Activate Your Future programme draws to a close, we reflect on a remarkable few months of helping 16–21-year-olds navigate their next steps. This initiative formed part of the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer, a government-funded mission designed to remove barriers for those who are currently NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) or at risk of becoming so.

Funded by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, we’ve run three unique editions spanning industries such as Healthcare, Fitness, Hospitality and beyond. We’ve worked alongside some incredible partners such as Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Fitness Rush Mobile and Oscar's Pizza

Throughout this programme, we have had the privilege to witness firsthand the tenacity of young people involved. We’ve listened to the stories that brought them to us and more importantly, we’ve seen the resilience and drive that is carrying them forward.

As an organisation this programme had its challenges, and we’ve learnt many lessons along the way that will inform how we work in the future.

Participants are now transitioning into employment, securing interviews, and, most crucially, walking away with more confidence and a clearer sense of what’s next.

We are committed to continuing to support all the young people involved. This isn’t the end; this is where it starts. We want to continue to be there to help them move towards their future goals.

We hope to keep running these sorts of programmes in the future, reaching even more young people and providing them with the tools they need to succeed.

As we wrap up, we’ll be sharing some of the inspirational stories we’ve seen along the way, from our employers, facilitators and participants to celebrate everything they’ve learnt, gained and achieved. Our first spotlights with Kate Greenwood and Sam are now available to read on our website: https://formthefuture.org.uk/news?_sft_category=activate-your-future
