heads play a 🔑 role in supporting staff and building a supportive culture.

Measuring staff and satisfaction of basic psychological needs using our relational auditing tools helps highlight ways that work can be made more sustainable in AP settings.

Helping staff to recognise the accomplishment of incremental progress is one key factor.

Building transformative relationships that support whole child development takes time. A ‘repair and return’ model of reintegration risks seeing pupils as the problem and not mainstream schools inability to meet their needs. Real quality requires transferrable gains but relational handovers are not easy.

While most children – including my own two – enjoyed their first few short weeks back with their friends and teachers in schools before Easter and are now getting stuck back in after the break, I’ve found myself preoccupied with thoughts about the 53,000 children who, for one reason or another...

To look at relationships around , we’ve replicated some work we did with the Care Quality Commission on Local System Reviews. Leadership is key but relying on local heroes (or more often heroines) to hold things together is not always sustainable. We hope the DfE will look closely at system improvement and not just the performance of individual providers.

The current consultation on the government’s SEND Review talks about the right support in the right place at the right time. But for too many pupils is still being used as a diagnostic holding pen, a protective bubble against systemic failure or a desperate last chance saloon when all else has failed (or not even tried).

For some pupils AP isn’t the right place, and earlier support should be provided elsewhere. But where it is the right place (and we’re seeing some wonderful provision with transformative relationships), it should be properly recognised and valued.

is improving, is more visible and better understood, but is still variable and fragile.

Many heads have described the journey of AP from places where children were conveniently forgotten to those where they are known and nurtured.
