Pop-up talk, The Cambridge Room, 15th July

Drawing on newly discovered archival materials from the Ove Arup & Partners archive, this talk explores how Japanese architect Yuzo Mikami developed design approaches that encouraged Ove Arup’s vision of ‘Total Design’ and collaboration between architects and engineers.okazaki_arch

What’s Mill Road?

During the Cambridge Festival in March, we hosted a public workshop and shared a collective map of Mill Road developed from 267 surveys between December and February. The workshop also generated a second round of conversations on social change, local histories, and key areas for improvement.

Working with the Mill Road History Society, the project has involved more than 300 residents, workers, visitors, volunteers, and students since the Winter Fair. The project asks how Mill Road is perceived, experienced, and imagined by people with different connections to the area. Where are the overlaps, differences, and common ground?

We are now continuing the work through a series of in-depth conversations and further analysis of the maps and surveys. More findings and reflections on the process itself will be shared in a publication coming soon.

Drought and Flood: The new normals for the Cambridge landscape
16th June, 5:30pm, The Cambridge Room

A public talk and discussion on designing for climate resilience through projects and practices in Cambridge.

Part of the ongoing exhibition Water, Land & the City: Towards a Sponge Cambridge, this public talk brings together Daniel Lee (Teasels Design) and Yair Perry (Water Sensitive Cambridge) to explore how Cambridge’s landscapes can respond to the growing challenges of drought and flooding through community gardens, rain gardens, and water-sensitive design.

Walking with Water in Common
Monday, May 25
10:00 - 15:00
What does it mean to notice a stream that is sometimes visible, sometimes hidden, yet shapes where and how we live?
This walking workshop invites you to get to know Hobson’s Brook from a new perspective, both its visible presence and hidden absence in Cambridge. Together we will engage creatively with the river, discover ways that water connects us, and explore how we might care for water collectively.
Thinking with community-led design and research practices we ask: How can collective making on-the-move be a methodology for knowing, caring, relating and prefiguring worlds with/as more-than-human agencies and communities?
The workshop is co-led by Gustav Nielsen and Violeta Tsenova of the Community Design Research Lab (CDRL), and Clara Todd of Water Sensitive Cambridge (WSC), with support from the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) at the University of Cambridge.

WATER, LAND & THE CITY: Towards a Sponge Cambridge

New exhibition:
Cambridge is more than its historic centre: it sits at the edge of the Fens, shaped by river valleys, chalk streams, and a long history of drainage and cultivation. This iterative exhibition explores our relationship with water and how we might move from controlling water to living with it. Drawing on the idea of ‘Sponge City’, the exhibition brings together international examples and practices alongside local rain garden and climate resilient projects across Cambridge.
With today’s Cambridge facing a dual challenge of flooding and water scarcity, this exhibition invites a reimagination of our relationship with water and the possibility of a more climate resilient, sponge-like Cambridge.

More water and environmental related events coming soon.

We thank the following individuals and organisations for their support and materials: & Wence Yu, & Clara Todd, & JJ Waters, & Daniel Lee, City of Copenhagen (Københavns Kommune), , and .arts.centre (Creative Youth Council).

Open discussion: visual methodologies in documenting community knowledge in planning

Situated within the debates around knowledge production, representation, and participation, this event explores how creative co-production can both reveal and challenge the hierarchies embedded in urban documentation. The event aims to open up dialogues about the ethics and politics of visibility and participatory visual methodologies.

The event will also, for the first time, share artworks produced by our residency artists Marion Stuart and Hannelore Smith following the open call in November 2025.
