The first drugs shown to slow Alzheimer's disease are already here, but people affected by dementia are still waiting to find out whether they'll be available on the NHS.

That's why we're calling on the Government to create a dedicated Dementia Drugs Fund, helping ensure promising new treatments reach those who need them sooner.

ā€œA Dementia Drugs Fund could provide a practical way to support access to promising new treatments, while building the evidence, clinical capacity and infrastructure needed to make them available responsibly and sustainably through the NHS.

Sailing solo around Great Britain is no small feat. Neither is raising Ā£15,000 for dementia research.

Last week, Paul Smith has reached an incredible fundraising milestone after sailing 2,048 nautical miles and spending 115 days at sea.

ā€œI watched friends retiring around me and saw many of their future plans snatched away by the devastation of a dementia diagnosis. I became acutely aware that nothing will change until we find a cure.ā€

"My mum, Wendy, who is living with young onset Alzheimer's disease, took part in a clinical trial and I'm so proud of her for being part of it. She was trying to take an active role in doing something that might benefit her, but she stuck with it because she was conscious of the fact that it would have impact for other people in the future.ā€

Wendy was diagnosed when she was 60 after her family pushed for a diagnosis and then became involved in a clinical trial for a few years. Mel would encourage anyone to get involved in research as it can hold the key to a cure.

ā€œI attended a feedback session called ā€œkeeping brain connections healthyā€ as part of a new study. It was run at Imperial College London to gather feedback from people with lived experience of dementia to help the team design the project that benefits those affected by dementia.

ā€œIt was great to be with a group of likeminded people ā€“ you donā€™t need to be a scientist, or someone with memory problems, to help advance research!

"I'm really passionate about research and the important role it plays. That's why I signed up to Join Dementia Research. I'm a healthy volunteer as part of that and it means that I get notified about opportunities to take part in research in the future."

Someone alive today could be the first person cured of Alzheimer's disease.

That thought fills Cici with hope.

After seeing dementia affect both of her grandmothers and her dad, Neil, she knows how urgently we need progress.

ā€œJean is the love of my life. But thereā€™s nothing to be done for her dementia. In her honour, I do it all for our four children, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren as well as half the human raceā€, said Charles.

Charlesā€™s wife, Jean, has been living with Alzheimerā€™s disease for the last 12 years. Jean and Charles have been married for 68 years and met when Charles gate-crashed a dance in Edinburgh in 1956.

To celebrate his 93rd Birthday, former naval officer Charles took to the skies and ā€˜flew like an Eagleā€™ on the Brighton zipwire during World Alzheimerā€™s Month, to raise money and awareness of this devastating disease.

ā€œAfter abseiling down the Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower for my 92nd Birthday, rowing in the naval transatlantic rowing boat, Oardacious, for my 91st and parachuting out of a plane for my 90th, Iā€™m now planning what to do for my 94th Birthday!

ā€œIā€™m raising money for Alzheimerā€™s Research UK. Research is the only way we can get better treatments and eventually a cure.

ā€œOne in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime, either by living with it, caring for someone, or both. It has a huge impact on families like mine.

ā€œI want to raise as much money towards research as I can so that my children and grandchildren do not have to go through the heartbreak and devastation that Jean and I have lived through. A cure is in sight.

Only research will get us there faster.ā€

ā€œThinking about the first person to be cured of Alzheimerā€™s not only gives me hope, but absolute excitement. I donā€™t want to see another family go through what we have been through. We will find that cure.ā€

Helenā€™s dad, Kevin, was diagnosed with Alzheimerā€™s disease. The impact dementia had was devastating for them both.

ā€œMy dad was a really funny, relaxed kind of guy. He was an incredible marathon runner and he lived a very healthy life. Thatā€™s why it was a shock when he got Alzheimerā€™s.

ā€œI remember feeling this pit in my stomach because I was scared of what was ahead. Dad was in denial about it for a long time. I think it was hard for him to accept his diagnosis.ā€

Helen joined with other people affected by dementia to feature in our new film. She believes that someone alive today could be the first person to be cured of Alzheimerā€™s.

ā€œI loved being at the film shoot with everyone. It was a brilliant day to stand together for a cure. Itā€™s motivating to know that Alzheimerā€™s Research UK is raising awareness that is making a difference because dementia causes heartbreak for so many people.

ā€œFor me, dementia research is whatā€™s going to change things for the future, for my children, and for their children.

ā€œA cure for dementia would mean that I could stop worrying about my family. It would take all the worries that one of us is going to get dementia away. To get there faster for everyone affected, we need to fund dementia research now.ā€
