Cambridgeshire Deaf Association We’re here for local deaf people of all ages and their families to get the most out of life. We put deaf people first in everything we do.

We provide support, advocacy, social opportunities, care and a range of other innovative services like sign language classes, media, sports, deaf awareness training and campaigning. We operate every day of the week and every week of the year improving the wellbeing of deaf people. Jodie On Tour: Befriending boat trip

Back in April, Jodie joined our Befriending group for a trip along the River Great Ouse with the Ladybird Boat Trust, setting off from Hartford Marina near Huntingdon.

Sunshine, a trip through the lock, lunch by the river and plenty of good company. Jodie shares what she thought of the day at the end.

Our Befriending events bring Deaf people together across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, with BSL-signing volunteers there to support. If you'd like to come along to the next one, send us a message.

🚒 We had some special visitors at our Wisbech Hearing Help drop-in last week.

Huge thanks to James Carney and the crew from Wisbech Fire Station, who came to talk to our clients about home fire safety and showed everyone how sensory smoke alarms work. They use flashing lights and a vibrating pad under your pillow, so you wake up even if you can't hear the alarm.

Did you know Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service will fit these for free? You just need to ask for a free Home Fire Safety Visit.

Captioned guided walks in Huntingdon and St Ives

Join the Cromwell Museum's curator, Stuart Orme, for an evening walk through Cromwell's Huntingdon or St Ives, with captions for people who are Hard of Hearing. Riley from our Hearing Help team will be on both walks too.

HUNTINGDON: Thursday 22 October, 7pm
Meet outside the Cromwell Museum on Grammar School Walk. Royal visits, Civil War battles and even witch trials. Suitable for wheelchair users.

ST IVES: Thursday 29 October, 7pm
Meet by Cromwell's statue on Market Hill. The Civil War, the great fire of St Ives, the market and the curious story behind the statue.

Each walk lasts about 90 minutes and goes ahead whatever the weather, so wrap up warm. Tickets are £8, or £6 for full-time students and museum members.

What a day at the Great Eastern Run. All four of our runners made it over the line, Kirsty Dorkenoo brought BSL to the main stage, and Cllr Dr Shabina Qayyum, Leader of Peterborough City Council, stopped by for a chat.

After seven and a half years on our Board, Fil Kamps will step down as our Chair in December.

Thank you, Fil, for everything you've given to CDA and to the Deaf community.

That means we're looking for our next Chair.

It's a chance to represent the Deaf and hard of hearing community, hold our team to account, keep us on track with our CDA for Life strategy, and be a voice for Deaf people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

You don't need to be a member, a BSL user or an experienced trustee. You just need a link to the Deaf or hard of hearing community and a passion for helping others. It's around a couple of hours a week.

Imagine learning to read and write a language you can't hear.

That's what English is like for a lot of Deaf people. For many, BSL is a first language, with its own grammar and word order, so English comes second. And for Deaf people who don't sign, it's still hard to learn a language you've never heard.

So we're starting a new English course for Deaf people at City College Peterborough, where we've run our Peterborough Drop-In for years. It's open to all Deaf people. Charlene tells you all about it in BSL, with captions.

Every Tuesday from 10 November, 1pm to 3pm
City College, Brook Street, Peterborough PE1 1TU
Two BSL interpreters at every session
Writing and spelling together, and building confidence

Up to 10 places. You need to live in Peterborough or Cambridgeshire, or be out of work.
