Please join us in welcoming Fanja, our newest Deputy Country Director for Madagascar 🇲🇬

With over 20 years of experience across finance, administration, HR and operations management, Fanja brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience to the HoverAid Madagascar team. Having worked across NGOs, consultancy, logistics and large-scale agricultural businesses, she is passionate about supporting impactful work that reaches the most remote communities.

💬 *What excited you about joining HoverAid?*

💬 *What is your role?*
“As the Deputy Country Manager for HoverAid in Madagascar, I support the overall management of our operations, making sure our projects run smoothly and reach the people who need us most.”

💬 *What are your hopes for HoverAid in Madagascar?*

This is Hasisoa and her new baby, born during our most recent Medical Safari at Ampasinambo.

After delivery by caesarean section, the baby did not breathe for 30 minutes. Thanks to the persistence and skill of our anesthesiologist, who carried out repeated resuscitation attempts, this little life was saved.

Today, both mother and baby are doing well. 💛

Stories like this remind us why access to emergency medical care in remote communities matters so much.

“Health is never just a question of medicine.”

These powerful words from Tanya Hock in this week’s MHM newsletter are an important reminder of the reality many families across rural Madagascar face every day.

In many communities, entire families may live, cook and sleep in a single small room. Animals are often sheltered in the same space, smoke from indoor cooking fills the air, and access to clean water and basic hygiene facilities can be extremely limited.

These conditions don’t just make life difficult - they directly impact health.

Many patients are not only fighting illness itself, but also the daily challenges that contribute to poor health:
💧 Lack of clean water
🧼 Limited hygiene facilities
🍚 Poor nutrition
🏠 Unsafe or overcrowded living conditions

It’s why organisations like HoverAid and our partners at Mobile Hilfe Madagaskar (MHM) believe healthcare must go beyond treatment alone.

Alongside medical care, long-term change also comes through:
✔️ Clean water access
✔️ Hygiene education
✔️ Nutrition support
✔️ Prevention and community health programmes

Because when a family gains access to clean water, when knowledge helps prevent disease, or when a child grows up healthier - the impact reaches far beyond a single patient.

Thank you to Tanya Hock and the MHM team for sharing these reflections and photographs from their work in Madagascar. 🤍

🚨 A major milestone for HoverAid 🚨

Earlier this month, during our Medical Safari in Beroroha, we successfully carried out an additional mobile outreach clinic in the remote community of Volambita using our new hovercraft, FAITH.

This is the first time we have been able to run an extra clinic alongside one of our main MMS operations - opening up exciting new possibilities for reaching even more isolated communities across Madagascar with essential healthcare.

Volambita is home to around 900 people, with the nearest health centre approximately 27 km away on foot. Over two days, two HoverAid doctors travelled from our main MMS operations in Beroroha to provide consultations and treatment directly within the community.

🩺 145 patients seen
🚁 Enabled by hovercraft FAITH
📍 One of the most remote communities in the region

For many residents, this was the first time they had ever experienced a medical outreach clinic in their own community.

This mission is another important step towards bringing healthcare closer to those who need it most.

Look out for the full MMS Beroroha report coming soon for more statistics and stories from the mission.

A clean water point is only sustainable when a whole community comes together to protect it 💧

As part of HoverAid’s Community Health & WASH Programme, the community associations we helped facilitate in Soatana and Volambita have worked with their villages to agree a set of rules for the use and protection of their new clean water supplies.

These locally agreed guidelines help ensure the water system remains safe, fair and operational for everyone who depends on it.

The central village tap is open daily from 10am–2pm only, and the community has agreed to:
-Do not use this water supply outside of the agreed hours
-Do not bring animals into the tap area
-Do not wash your clothes or dishes here
-Do not bring a knife into this area
-Do not steal or destroy the pump equipment

What’s powerful about this sign is that these are not rules imposed from outside — they are community-led agreements, created and upheld by the people themselves.

Clean water changes lives, but long-term impact comes through ownership, responsibility and local leadership 🤍

A night no one will forget 💛
Baby Avotra – Beroroha, Madagascar | April 2026

Late one evening, a mother in labour was brought from her remote village to Beroroha Hospital after complications during delivery. Her baby was lying sideways, and the local midwife knew urgent help was needed.

The call came through for an emergency caesarean section. Our medical team, who had only arrived that day, were quickly woken and rushed to the hospital.

As instruments were being sterilised and the team prepared for surgery, the situation changed dramatically - the baby’s foot had already emerged. There was no time for an operation.

Working together with the hospital staff, our surgeon and team did everything possible to safely deliver the baby.

When she was born, she was not breathing.

For the next hour and a half, the combined team fought for her life - using oxygen, suction, skill and determination.

Then… she breathed 💛

She was given the name Avotra, which means “saved.”

Stories like this are only possible because skilled teams can reach places where healthcare is limited and emergencies cannot wait.

Join us tomorrow morning for a lovely community coffee morning in support of HoverAid ☕🍰

Very kindly hosted by Haslingfield Methodist Church, there’ll be plenty of tea, coffee and homemade cakes available from 8:45am – 11:30am.

Some of the HoverAid team will also be there, including Jess & Steve, so it’s a great chance to come along, have a chat, learn more about our work, and enjoy a warm welcome.

If you’re free and able to pop over to support both the church and HoverAid, we’d love to see you there! 💙

🚑 The first Madagascar Medical Safari of 2026 begins today!

Our team will be travelling 500km west across the central mountains of Madagascar to reach the remote community of Ambatolahy. For Maholy and the team, this is no small journey. A two-day drive and a significant logistical challenge before the medical work can even begin.

When we visited Ambatolahy in 2025, the impact was extraordinary. Across three weeks of outreach clinics, the team saw and treated 1,742 people, including 140 surgical operations.

These missions bring vital healthcare to communities that would otherwise have little or no access to medical support.

We wish Maholy and the team a safe journey as they begin the first Madagascar Medical Safari (MMS) of the year. We’ll be sharing updates from the field as the mission progresses. 💚

🏃‍♂️ Our HoverRunners are ready! 💚

After months of training, our elite squad of HoverRunners have now tapered down their training and are getting ready for the big day at the Cambridge Half Marathon!

So far, just over £9,000 has been raised through the incredible generosity of individual sponsors — which is amazing. Thank you to everyone who has supported the team so far.

We would absolutely love to reach our £10,000 fundraising target, and with your help we’re nearly there!

Every donation goes directly towards our medical and community health work in Madagascar, helping us reach remote communities with life-changing healthcare and support.

💚 If you’d like to help push us over the finish line, please consider donating and cheering our runners on! (Link in the comments below)

Thank you again to everyone who has donated so far — your support truly makes a difference.
